How do I combine payment for one item from two cards?

I want to pay the majority from a prepaid visa gift card and the balance from my credit card

I understand that you would like to make the payment using 2 different cards. Unfortunately, you won't be able to pay this way. When you make a payment, we will try to retrieve the full payment from the funding source, if there is an insufficient balance, we will try to retrieve it from your backup funding source. I am afraid that the option to splitting the payment into 2 cards is currently not possible on PayPal.

Two comments

1) apparently, according to you, the way to achieve my goal is to pay with a gift card with insufficient funds and have PayPal take the balance from my credit card. I did try this. PayPal just rejected the payment as insufficient. They didnt attempt to complete the payment with the secondary card.

2) I solved the problem by having the vendor split the bill. I paid the two parts of the bill with the two different cards.

hope this helps someone in the future. I didn’t find PayPal to be very helpful, considering the solution is very simple.
