Is there a way for me to know that I am sending an eCheck?

I have been buying items from people this past week and all of the transactions have been easy (using friends and family) except for one of them which has randomly been sent as an eCheck. We can't complete the transaction until the money finishes processing. Is there a way to see if the payment will be an eCheck before sending the money? I really want to avoid this happening again as it makes sales really slow.

eCheques are usually sent when you do not have a card linked.

Not really a way to tell because there are cases where your payment could be sent as an eCheque, even if you’ve linked both a bank account and a credit/debit card to your PayPal account because PayPal’s internal security system has intervened.

In order for a bank payment to go as ‘instant transfer’ PayPal has to advance the money immediately to the seller out of pocket while they wait for your bank payment to clear. This is PayPal’s way to artificially speed up bank payments as they are always slow. If PayPal’s internal security system determines there is risk of the bank account not having the funds, they’re not going to front the money but rather process an eCheque.

At times, using an eCheque is really beneficial especially if say you discover the seller or website is a scam after checkout, you may call your bank to cancel the eCheque and that’ll be the end of it. The seller will be notified the eCheck failed.

With an ‘instant transfer’, you’re pretty much stuck paying because PayPal had advanced the money to the seller and PayPal has to collect, no matter what and will make your PayPal account negative if need be. Then you’ll have to go through the dispute process to get your money back.

To ensure your payment is instant is to select a card (preferably a credit card with ample limit to cover entire purchase) as the payment method during checkout instead of a bank account.

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂
