Refund to wrong card

I purchased something in October using a card which was jointly used by me and my ex (wasn't ex at the time). We've since separated and the person I purchased the item from has issued a refund. I tried messaging PayPal using the message centre but it's broken. It says if you need more help, type need more help. Which if you do it replies, could you repeat that. I then called the help centre and explained the situation to the customer service rep who was worse than useless. I told him the situation and said that the account has now actually been closed and the card cancelled etc. I therefore want the refund either to sit on my PayPal balance so I can use it or refund to my card/bank. I was told that they can certainly help me. What they would do is send the refund to the cancelled card/closed account and then if I call the bank, they'll transfer the money to me. I tried to explain that the money would just bounce back and he said nope, the bank would hold it for me. Which is incorrect. I then asked to speak to a manager who were apparently all engaged and he took my number and confirmed they would call me back. This was 13 hours ago! Does anyone know how to contact someone who is able to actually assist me at PayPal as their message centre doesn't work, and their call centre are not at all qualified to take calls.

If you funded the payment via a card then it will automatically be sent back to that card.

It only bounces if funded from a bank account that has been closed or payment denied.

So as it goes automatically back to your card then how you get the refund is between you and your old card issuer.
