On Jan 18th an online merchant that I often buy from submitted a $5 invoice for my typical monthly charge. I intended to cancel that and thought I did but it was not canceled and paypal sends it to my bank as the funding source if I have no paypal balance. I wasn't expecting any bills to come through and I was letting that account sit with a small balance and not using it for anything. When the $5 charge came to the bank, there were no funds so it was returned, twice. That's 2 overdrafts at $50 per. Generally when I have used this merchant in the past, if an automatic payment is declined, they suspend the account and contact me to let me know I need to submit a new payment source to continue service. Not so this time. On Jan 19th the nightmare continues. This went on from Jan 18th to Jan 27th. On the 27th I logged on to my paypal and the first thing I see is that huge list of pending $5 payments.
I contacted the merchant and told them the daily request needs to stop because there is no money in the accounts and won't be for a while. That is the day the payments stopped but I didn't think paypal would run the same transaction through every day for a long time. On my paypal dashboard I saw a negative balance in big red numbers and a bunch of -$5 pending charges for the same merchant.
When I caught the issue on the 27th I did not think this would be an issue at my bank because the payment was pending on paypal. Today is the first time I logged in and checked my account in a couple of weeks. I had some bills to pay so I deposited 400 in my bank account. When I checked my balance to see if my 400 was posted and it was but I had a -180 balance with more pending -$5 transactions and more pending overdrafts.
I tried calling paypal but this doesn't seem to fit in the standard phone prompts and I could not get transferred to a human for a long time and then the call disconnected. I tried sending them a message and those prompts are no better then the call bot. Then I realized this the best place to interact with a human without the chat prompts. This is a lot to try to condense down to one of a few small choices.
Is there a way to call directly to a human CS that could help me find the right person to help me? The bot wanted to help but I could not get this mess down to one of the choices. I tried asking about pending payments but I could only select one at a time. I **bleep** somewhere along the line and had to start over.
Today started out such a good day. Thought I had that $400 bucks in the bank and and then immediately at a huge red negative number. Just like that my good day was gone and I have a headache trying to explain this. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any help or guidance you can offer.

Hey. Thanks for the reply. I have managed to contact support and it has been exhausting. I finally made it through leaving them a message. We did the back and forth messaging and it seemed like nobody who was replying could see my account activity to see what I was trying to explain. A few different ones replied stating that the request was made two times as stated in Paypals terms. I finally sent them a pdf of my account activities showing that the payment was sent to my bank everyday from Jan 18 to Feb 8, sometimes more than once.
When one of them finally read what I was saying and compared that to the transactions, she seemed to understand and could see why I was so frustrated. She explained that she was going to write an email for me to send to my bank explaining that the transactions were unauthorized and a refund was given and suggested they consider reimbursing me all or part of the $500 NSF fees. I am still waiting to hear from them.
She assured me the problem was resolved and asked me to click on the end chat link so the issue can be closed. She seemed very reassuring and confident I would be very pleased with the outcome. So far there is no outcome. My bank is still deciding if they will refund any of the NSF fees so I went from broke to $500 more broke all over a $5 transaction that was canceled. Then I noticed yesterday that two more paypal echeck transactions for $5 were sent to my bank. There are funds in my that account now so they will clear but it was all canceled. The merchant canceled the unpaid invoice so Paypal is requesting money from my bank and nobody is owed the money.
Ending the chat session was a mistake on my part. Before that I was able to type a message anytime I needed to give them information or ask a question and the next available CS person would reply. Without that I had to start over. The ones I've talked to so far are either unable or unwilling to look at my account activities and have been quite rude in their replies. Reassuring me that paypal only sends requests through twice and then asked that I read Paypals terms so I understand what happens. I do understand what is supposed to happen but something not normal happened and that is the big issue I want resolve. The last one that replied that he understood my frustration but stated that the payment was only sent through twice and nothing was unauthorized. He does not understand my frustration because telling me something that was not what my account activity showed and saying nothing was unauthorized when a Paypal CS rep stated it was unauthorized and put it in writing.
I've been very patient through this whole ordeal. It is getting difficult. I have tried to maintain my composure but the f bombs and insults became necessary. When I send a muli paragraph message and attach a few supporting documents and a few minutes later I am being reassured that the request was only sent twice, that one is going to be called ignorant and see some colorful language. To top it off, as one explained that it was only sent through 2 times he also explained to me that Paypal does not charge NSF fees and whatever NSF fees that did occur I had to talk to my bank because Paypal will not pay for them. I already explained that I was waiting for my bank to reply and that he needed to read what I wrote and respond with things related to what I ask. Not some ignorant assumptions. Not once in this whole nightmare did I ask about Paypal paying anything. I just want the problem fixed.
I guess I'm just venting now. It's frustrating. Nobody I contact at Paypal seems to care. My bank has been less than helpful and
very rude and condescending when I call. I've been a customer with them for nearly 40 years. Most vehicles I've bought in my lifetime were financed through them. I've purchased two homes over the years and I gave them my business. When I first contacted them I was asking for help. Things were bouncing though my accounts that shouldn't have been and racking up NSF charges and I called hoping they could help me figure out what was going on.
When I was desperate to get a hold of someone at Paypal to help me resolve the problem, I was at least hopeful they would be able to fix whatever is broken. I will continue to try but have no hope they can or will be helpful in any way.
