This is an unacceptable change.

Now PayPal converts the price to some value in my local currency (currently multiplies it by the national bank rate + 4% interest), which is charged to my card issuer. They, in their turn, detect it, convert it back to the card foreign currency (divides it by their buying rate, as if they were buying the currency), then convert it to local currency with another rate (as if they were selling it), and add MasterCard 1% interest.

So as a result, I'm paying 6% for each transaction. It's way too much.

I'm having issues with currency conversion. I'm from Albania but I have debit card in EUR and my primary in EUR, when I get withdrawal PayPal convert the EUR to ALL with about 7-10% of fee and the Bank that issued the Card make another exchange from ALL to EUR with 5% of fee. I'm losing about 15% of my money with your automatic currency conversion. Please help.

Hi there,

The most awkward thing that my card currency is USD, I have to pay in USD but PayPal making payment through my local currency without any chance to change anything. I can adjust convesion method only after I have paid for subscribtion. So I have got double conversion which adds +5% to the amount.

That's just aggravating and strong armed/obnoxious... I guess I'll just get a few virtual cards and work around using Paypal at all then.

I cannot believe this.
I will use PayPal a lot less going forward and look for an alternative that does not rip me off on currency conversion.

Thanks everyone!

I am very disappointed by this and the noncompetitive rates.  For other folk on this thread, I wanted to let you know that other payment systems (notably the fruit based one) do allow paying in the native currency but is not as widely supported.  I find most sites support at least one of the Paypal alternatives so it is worth adding a few more payment systems for these occasions.

Sadly for Paypal I have found these others systems to be just as easy and sometimes easier to use and I sometimes use them now by default.  Weird move Paypal.

This is ripping customers off. You force us to you your conversion rates without ask to make money off us. My card is in USD. Our local currency cards are blot accept outside my country so then I get charged by PayPal up to put in my currency and then VISA to put it back.

Earning as much as possible ...  That's PayPal's target.

"Earning" is not the right word for such an underhanded money grabbing tactic...

To find a conversion rate as bad as PayPal's, I think you'd have to go to a back alley in Prague.. at night.. intoxicated.. with a T-Shirt that says "USA #1".

I think I speak for all users (at least those who noticed how badly they're getting ripped off) when I ask for a feature to disable default currency conversion by PayPal. Currently you can change it to allow your credit card to convert, but you have to do this for every single purchase, via small link on the purchase verification page - this is very annoying and easy to miss.

Providing such a bad conversion rate - with the inability to change the default behavior - amounts to predatory tactics by PayPal, in my opinion.
