Money sent to an invalid email address

Does anyone have advice please. Money was sent to an email address that should have been emailaddress.org however it was incorrectly sent to email address.co.uk The money was sent but the recipient has not received the money. Where can this money be? Paypal are unable to resolve.

What does it say on the transaction in your paypal account??

Thanks for replying. It shows money sent with a transaction ID, amount, email address (with incorrect ending of co.uk). PayPal can’t offer advice as no goods purchased. This was money sent to a dog charity but they haven’t received, previous money sent was received but correct .org was used.

ok if it says money 'sent' then it was transferred using the friends/family option as a gift payment.

Unfortunately you don't have buyer protection for that sort of payment so you only have 2 options.

1. Contact the 'wrong' email address and request that they refund as the funds were sent in error.

2. If the above doesn't work then 'if' you funded your paypal payment via a credit card then talk to your card issuer and see if they will chargeback for you. However they may decline as well due to the payment 'type'.

Thanks for your advice. The ‘incorrect’ email is only incorrect because of the .co.uk at the end as it has a dog charity name that would not be used by someone else. So how can this money disappear? Into cyberspace? If there isn’t an email address to send it to why wouldn’t it bounce back and show unsent ? Any explanation appreciated. Lisa

If its marked as SENT then it has completed so the email must be valid.

If it was an invalid email OR not linked to a paypal account it would show as unclaimed.

Really helpful thank you. I’ve established that there is an email still active so it’s a case of someone opening the email. I think this dog charity may be unaware of this email but at least you’ve helped resolve the issue. I now need to ask who manages their domain.

Since my last post the email I sent to the ‘invalid email address’ that I thought was sent and a was ‘active’ has come back ‘undelivered’. So how has PayPal managed to send money to this same address? Further advice appreciated.
