Paypal fees from "Goods and services" default

I'm wondering how many paypal users have been ripped off by paypal as I was last night. I sent my son a sizable amount of money. Paypal kept $50 of it as a "goods and services" fee because I was not aware that i had to manually change their default setting. There is no warning that a fee will be charged if you don't change it. When I called the customer service line they were not helpful. Has anyone else had this happen?

Guess you sent the funds using the goods/services option (fee) as against the friends/family option (FREE).

However you still 'may' be charged a fee using friends/family if you fund the payment via a credit card (free if you fund it from balance or bank account). Also you may pay a cross border fee if sending the payment internationally.
