"System is currently unavailable" message when trying to send money

I've been trying to send money to a friend for days now, but every time I get the following message after entering their email address:

"The system is currently unavailable. Please try again in a few minutes".

I've tried on both my mobile and PC, and using different browsers. Nothing works.

The error only seems to appear when the recipient is in another country (ie using a different currency). If I try to send to someone within my country, or an email address that doesn't have a paypal account, it works fine. So it seems to be the currency converter that is causing the error.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Thanks!

If you are using funds in your 'balance' then generally they have to be in the correct currency, paypal will convert however if you use a bank account or card to fund the payment.

Funds will be coming from my card, so there shouldn't be any issues with the currency conversion.

Hi, I had the same problem. I managed to solve it by adding the destination currency to my account:

  • Click on your name (or the cogwheel) in the top-right corner and then on 'Account settings'.
  • Then under the category 'Business profile' click on 'Money, banks and cards'.
  • Then under 'Currencies' add your required currency.

I don't know how this differs if you use a private account, instead of business, but assume it is similar.

Good luck.
