American Express 4-digit verification code not appearing

Hello, I recently received an american express gift card that I added to my paypal wallet. Paypal sent me a charge of $1.95 in order to verify the card, and I was told that a verification code would pop up like this: PP*1234CODE. However, I have not gotten any code like that - instead I got "PP* MERCHANT CHARGE G000GHG7 SAN JOSE, CA." 

I've contacted amex gift help lines multiple times, and they said they couldn't help me. One representative told me to ask paypal.

Is there anything I can do?

I understand that you're unable to find the code to confirm your card. Please note that when you confirm your card, we’ll charge your card $1.95. This charge and a 4-digit PayPal code will appear on your card statement within 2-3 business days and not immediately. If you're unable to locate it, you may request for new one by following the instruction to get a new code under wallet by clicking the card you want to confirm. However, if you request the PayPal code more than once, you’ll find more than 1 charge on your card statement. You need to use the latest code that you requested. In this case, since you could not access the code via online statements, you can check for the code when you receive your next statement in the mail [if you have opted for one]. If not, kindly request the code again. Just for your information, once you successfully confirm your card, we’ll immediately refund the charge. Your card issuer will credit your balance within 30 days of the refund date.
