HORRIBLE IDEA TO HOLD FUNDS FOR 21 DAYS!!!

Holding funds from sellers until the buyer leaves feedback is the worst idea EVER! Since when does Paypal become an authority on buyer satisfaction?? A smooth transaction is all that I wanted from Paypal. If they are going to hold funds, then they should make it very clear BEFORE you use them!  Keeping my money in their account for 21 days is a HUGE disadvantage of using Paypal. Stick to transferring funds, not trying to be a satisfaction authority!

Best of luck to you.

You are discovering what I recently discovered: since they own it they can do what they want. Two examples I've encountered:

Want to use this sight? Get a paypal visa.

Want to use this sight? Give us your bank information.

That is just the way it is and I was told by others that if I didn't like it I should not use it. Years ago there was a bumper sticker: America, Love it or Leave it. Guess the same applies to paypal.

Just wish you didn't have to go out that way, all the stress.

If you ever find a better system, please post back.

Thanks for the comments.  Once I made the decision to quit eBay and PayPal and closed all my active auctions, my stress level dropped to zero.  I'm getting out of this to avoid stress.

I've been using eBay and PayPal on a small scale.  Mostly to sell items that I've bought at one time or another and no longer need.  I don't, nor have I ever planned to run a business through eBay and PayPal.  I can live without it and don't really need an alternative.  Maybe they're actually trying to weed out folks like me.  Who knows.

I do have a lot more sympathy for businesses that actually sell through eBay and PayPal after this experience.  Good luck.

Thank you for posting this. I may be right behind you headed out the door. It's the tax thing that's finishing me off. Yes, it's coming from the govt, but talk about big brother! So selling your personal stuff to keep your head above water (like my sister) is now a taxable event if you go over $20,000/200 transactions? Really? Once I sold a car I bought new for $7300, drove it for 6 yrs, and got $2400 for it when I sold it, but I didn't take a $4900 loss on my taxes! Is that where we're headed? Add this on to the usual ebay/paypal hoopla and this may finish it for me.

Did you have bank and card attached to your Payal and eBay acct.s?

I just wondered if they told you that something was missing or if they had asked you for the SS info to verufy you and you never submitted that info. Not too long ago we all received a letter about the new policy and were warned that hold on the account could follow. .. What was the reason you were given for the hold?

That information would elp the next person.

There is either a reason, or they think they have cause to take the actions they have taken. I'n not trying to tke a side. Knowing how it was justified would be a help.

They were initially reluctant to tell me why there was a hold.  When forced, I've been told several different things:

1.  "It's nothing personal, it's a new policy and all accounts are now being held."  This is of course BS, but it did manage to get me off the phone the first time.  After I did a little more research, I discovered that they had been holding accounts for more than a year, but there was no hold on mine as late as October 2011.  So I called them back to find out specifically what had changed about my account since October 2011 that now placed me in a high risk group...

3.  "There's no consistency in the type of items you're selling."  This seemed like total BS to me as well, so I pressed the issue and got the next reason...

2.  "The hold on your account was requested by eBay.  Let me transfer you."  Ebay's response: "We're holding all accounts that have less than 25 total sell transactions.  Oh, I see you have 26.  I'm going to go ahead and get that hold lifted and I 100% assure you that the next item you sell will not have a hold on it."  This actually turned out to be true.  I had an item sell and paid for less than 24 hours after that call, and the funds were not held, but the next day I received an email from PayPal informing me that from that day forward, my account would be held.

3. When I called PayPal, they told me that they also required a minimum total sells of 25, and that according to their review of my feedback, I only had 17.  I tried to explain that my eBay dashboard showed 26 sells, but they insisted that they could only go by a review of my feedback as a seller.  In other words, you have to have 25 positive feedback ratings left.  Not 25 sells.  Now everyone knows that there are a lot of inexperienced buyers that simply don't ever leave feedback, and quite frankly, I've never pushed the issue with any of them.  If they leave feedback, fine, if not that's their choice.  I've certainly never received any negative feedback.  Anyway, it doesn't really matter anyway, because...

4. That's not 25 total sells, that's 25 sells per year.  Strike that.  25 positive feedback ratings as a seller per year.  Which I don't have and probably would not ever normally have (if I hadn't quit eBay and PayPal).  I just don't sell that much.

Bottom line.  I don't sell enough to have my hold lifted.  Forget that they have my bank account info, a credit card, I've been with eBay for 12 years and PayPal for 6 years, and I have 100% positive feedback as a buyer and a seller.

Though it looks like it's the 25 feedback ratings per year that got me, the reality of the situation is that their user agreement enables them to hold your account based on any arbitrary criteria that they come up with that puts you in a high risk group.  They could decide tomorrow that all customers with green eyes pose a higher risk and start holding those accounts.  Any there's nothing anyone can do about it... Except stop using them.

CALL EBAY, then CALL AGAIN. Let's clog the lines as often as possible. I try and call as much as I can and just keep asking the stupid questions they're forcing us too; "Why are you holding my funds when I didn't do anything wrong?", "Can you please go through all my items one by one and let me know what's going on?" .... Recently I can tell this has become a HUGE issue for the callers and something they deal with more and more. If we keep on them every day we may see ACTION. Maybe not, but I can't just sit here and have them gouge all of us for NO GOOD REASON.

KEEP CALLING my friends. OCCUPY EBAY/PAYPAL!!!

Good luck to everyone.

Life's too short.  I have better things to do with my time than harass eBay and PayPal.  They (and the business they provide) are simply not worth it.  I'm simply refusing to use their service again.  Many people get along just fine without giving a dime to either eBay or PayPal.  As of today, I'm one of those people.

Unfortunately Ebay is the ONLY real way to do proper auctions (PLS GOOGLE, Get w/ the program!! We'll all switch in a split second). And by using Ebay, you're somewhat forced to use Paypal. I'm sure this is out there, but what's the best payment method alternative to Paypal? Google Checkout is banned right?

I agree.  There really isn't another online auction option, but there is another option:  Stop participating in online auctions.  That's my choice at this point.  It's just not worth the headache.
