I think in such cases it is difficult to receive enough proof of the situation. PayPal also does not offer warranty so if it has worked for some time (altough fans apparently running high) then I think you can't really do anything. If it happens to be Macbook Pro from 2007 with Nvidia 8600 graphics card then those are very well known to have overheating and graphics card problems, Apple introduced repair extension program for those back then but of course it is no longer valid. Also I think that 400USD is way too much for 2007 MBP so unfortunately I think that was bad deal for you even if the laptop would work, now it is of course horrible. It also not uncommon for some people to "fix" failed graphics cards (solder contacts to be exact) with unprofessional ways and then sell them, because used stuff doesn't have warranty it is enough that it lasts for some time, as those "fixes" usually do.

180 days should indeed be the time limit, as far as I know that is also the general maximum limit for credit chargeback. If credit card company has investigated that something was wrong and orders PayPal to reverse payment PP can't really do much. You will lose the item, money and PP may also charge you 20USD becaude they "represented you" in a chargeback dispute. But of course, you should try to ask PP what is that all about. 180 days is a very long time for buyer to scam money and item, year is of course even worse.

There is no seller protection, I've seen some similar cases written and some customer representatives have apparently even said that. eBay also doesn't allow sellers to leave negative feedback, this is because they want to encourage buyers to spend more money, maybe that's the same thing with PayPal, if it allows you to scam free items of course you will use this great service again. I don't know if it would have made difference if you had video about the whole packing and sending process, in some written stories PP hasn't even bothered looking clear evidence apparently, buyer says he's not happy and gets money back plus keep the item of course.

Yeah, I know. I was stupid when I said the item did arrive, it would have been wiser to just lie that I didn't receive my item. However, some Chinese sellers have refunded atleast partially in similar cases like what I have now if I can remember correctly (I have been buying quite lot from China over the years). Seller has not responded yet. I also bought a console recently which was supposed to work OK but when it arrived I noticed that connector pins were bent and dirty so it was everything but OK, unusable since no gamed worked and it required great force to even push cartridge to it properly. Standard user would have opened claim but I decided to open the console and fix the connector and now it works so I guess I and of course the seller of that item avoided another PP case. But the charger I cannot fix and it wouldn't be worth the trouble to even try. I generally hate to open cases, first try to see if there would be simple fix.

Yes, I have bought same item from that same seller before, this time it just exploded 😄 Shipping from China is cheap (I guess they are sponsored by their goverment) but shipping back is expensive.

I bought charger and when it finally arrived it exploded immediately after connecting it. The item cost 3.65€ incl. shipping and shipping it back will cost 21,80€ (signed etc.). For these kind of situations I don't think there is much protection, I was bit stupid to say that the item did arrive because it was shipped without tracking, just should have said item not received and got my money back but now I have useless piece of junk and I paid 3.65€ for it. I know it's not big sum but for these kind of situations I think you are not protected by PP... well, if you really want to you can pay 21,80€ more and wait for another 3.65€ product 😄 The item is also unofficial clone which violates patents which I of course knew before ordering, but since I already opened item not as described I think I just have to accept that I got junk. I did request full refund but since the seller accepts returns I think I would need to return the item, which I of course won't do.

It's very worrying when a company handling people's money doesn't follow it's own rules. You have been scammed by the buyer and PayPal, the deadly duo.

If the delivery address was the same which buyer has on his PayPal information then the decision is weird. If not, he has scammed you. I don't know if there afe other methods which can be used when buyer provides his own labels. I suppose PayPal didn't tell you why the buyer won?

Stories like this make me scared to sell anything valuable on eBay, first time I heard of this chargeback scam was by watching ArchieLuxurys video about this issue. He too stated that PayPal is absolutely hopeless when this thing happens. It doesn't matter how well you follow rules and procedures set by eBay and PayPal if the buyer just wants to scam free item and his money back, he can do it, one way or another. After reading your story, I'm much more confident that the system is broken and you take a risk by selling expensive items on eBay, better sell them on sites where you can be assured that you can keep your money after the deal is done.

I think PayPal doesn't offer protection for custom-made items: https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/paypal-safety-and-security It has also been very long time since the transaction, much much longer than PayPal's 180 day claim time.
