Dear Raven, DannyK was telling the truth. For the level that they sold items for, it makes sense. Over $1k was held on my account, for OVER a year..the Oddest part = paypal would blame eBay for the hold, eBay would blame paypal for the hold..it was a never-ending circle. Fortunately, I made enough $ , to where it did not render me bankrupt. That is not true for many sellers and it did not lessen the Anger of the injustice of it all. With as many people that have been affected by this "rule', you'd think that someone would be able to slam and dunk this 'rule' with a Law that is in place to protect us ? I have no clue. If I had TIME, I would have persued it as far as obtaining an attorney at the time. Unfortunately, my days already need several more hours in them, to keep a decent living up, to live and not be late on any bills. IF the amount were $9k, I know that I would have taken paypal to task, legally and if they ever hold funds on my account again, I will have no other alternative. Not a threat, just fiscal sense.

Dear Madjen, There are many other items on esty, besides hand or home made items. maybe they changed since you posted. There are supplies, etc., i buy there sometimes but, most of the time, the deals are still on eBay for jewelry making supplies. it would seem that there would be at least one more auction site that "small business sellers' are not penalized for being 'small'. After all, it was people like me and a few million others, that 'made' eBay, what it is today. I was written about in a 'How to sell on eBay' book in the early 2000's, for my sales in the late 90's but, NO way in this world that I could even begin to do the same today as the opportunity is no longer there, due to the new rules that cater to large business, instead of us menial people, who built them.

Hello Skier, Is eBay/Paypal trying to accommodate large business and squeeze out small business ? If not, then, what is the purpose of making all of the rules to accommodate large business. With higher sales volume, sellers are not affected the same as small Mom & Pop businesses, that make up the American Dream and also makes up, those who first built eBay and Paypal in the early years, to become what they are today. I sold in the late 90's to the point of the actualization the American Dream before the inception of Paypal, due to the old rules that helped the Mom and Pop business, rather than hurt them. IMO, The rules should be different for small business, than it is for large business. Is there a possibility of the rules helping small business ever again or should small business just hang it up and go on, as you suggested ? Thank you for your time and reply, in advance.

The PROBLEM with this issue is that the current 5 star rating is set up to get small business out of eBay as people can easily stab you in the back with a smile by leavng you a positive comment about their item or items and totally slam you on the numbers, whether a situation is your fault or they are just having a bad day and you can lose your ability to sell on eBay. Why they have NO respect or care for those veterans on eBay (like me) that BUILT them to be where they are now, is simple..The all mighty buck, you are Owned, you are not a business owner ? if anyone thinks so, they are deceived. The constraints and control that the buyer along with eBay has over you now is a travesty to mom and pop businesses..many of my old timer friends that had shooting star feedback and have been there since the beginning, are already off of eBay or struggling to prove themselves innocent from liar buyers. It really used to be fair, believe it or not and paypal started out free ! The good old days are dead and we made a living that was fair back then when trade was fair for both seller and buyer.

Hi Olivia, It is the word of the buyer against the seller. Thus, equal points on each end are explained. However, the trend that I noticed last year, was that no matter if the seller is 100% correct in their description and has reciepts to Fax to Paypal (alone) of the actual, original purchase (as a buyer should never have the right to the privacy of the sellers sources)...The buyer is still found to be correct. Shouldn't there be a burden of proof ? Such as, if the seller has a GIA report (and the buyer then has the original it within their posession, due to the sale) and the seller has a copy...why then, side with the buyer and not an instance to where it is out of Paypals hands, such as credit card protection) just plain siding with the buyer period. Then, the buyer, has the power to ruin the 5 star board for the seller, to which, in my opinion, is the worst thing that eBay has ever put in place (and please do not say that you are NOT able to speak for eBay, legally and knowledgably, I KNOW different, you cannot split hairs with this - both Owned by eBay..I know a decision-make at paypal that I have actually spoken with that went directly into my eBay account, my fiance's, etc., so, YES! those reading, Paypal has 100% eBay priviledges and CAN get to the bottom of things and go through your entire account hiistory on BOTH!)... I have seen and know shooting star old timers along with many other eBay Vets like (small business, I was, but, now I am not selling on eBay now)..jus go DOWN the tubes due to the fact that although a buyer can leave a positive, they can stab you in the back because they did not like a FAIR shipping price OR they can say, well, I like it & I am going to keep it but, I expected a million dollare ring for $500 and place in the as described area a #1 and have no clue that they are Killing small business that are just making ends meet & trying to have the American Dream. I was there when Meg would actually answer questions for you..until eBay grew so large & just like Walmart (my hubb/fiance KNEW & was friends at the Home office with Sam Walton) has gone to the Dogs as far as Sam's Dream and yet, it is the ALL mighty dollar RULING eBay. Before you know it, every Mom & Pop business will be squeezed completely off eBay and what they have built and all of thier work and years with eBay is Just Corporate America NOW , today. Sad Day. I am beyond dissapointed with all of the changes that have killed the seller and placed the buyer and eBay in 100% control of what is supposed to be you very own business. I know that paypal is accepted on other selling sites. What is the next most successful auction site to where Vintage, Antique & Collectible Jewelry (example) takes Paypal ? My fiance is restricted from selling due to lying buyers and eBays pathetic 5 star (which lends for you to get stabbed in the back with a smile ie: positive feedback, low stars) and I have 3 chronic pain diseases and we have to live. So, your suggestion of a Best site to sell on, in the meanwhile to help our family, would be where ? (100 to 1 says, eBay owns you so, your hands are tied to suggest another site to me)..Nevertheless, a shot in the dark & an actual test, to be HONEST as I live my life and have many friends for 40+ years that would speak of my impeccable Character (eBay & Paypal doesn't have this right now by 99% - based on all I read from seasoned vets of paypal & eBay).,,so, let's see if you can get down to earth and real and care about an individual situation of a person that you held $ from for a year, there are things being spoken of among many here on the boards about that being illegal ? I don't really know, as well...paid you for over 11 years now, for your service and in our hardest time due to unfair eBay policies currently in place against the seller..NOT, truth, can you answer this ? Other than you, to the Other Sellers that may be reading this and have experiences the same situations and fate of the unfair practices on eBay, that have switched to other sites that sell used or collectible, antique & vintage items from sports to jewelry..where have you all gone to sell and do you still use paypal as your payment method ? I see nothing wrong with that as long as they NEVER hold money back from me again. If they do this again, should I decide to start selling from my bed as I have to now, Then & only then, would I sell a few pieces of my Museum Quality collection and get on with a lawyer but, as long as they don't hold my $ again, I can be okay with their fees alone at this time. I have the 'decision makers' phone number & name personally at Paypal and he & I worked things out in the end about releasing my funds - finally, and although, IMO paypal made a KILLING off the amount and length of time that they held MY money after (at the time) being with paypal for 10 years & NEVER once had a negative balance in ALL of those of me being faithful to paypal years. I reserve the right to still go after that according to the current & future relationship with paypal. Not any threats - no-no-no, I am just stating the reality of what I have been through, unfairly. I do not know about the legality at this time and I have not had the time for research since, I am bed ridden due to my illness on many days to where I am just catching up on many things as I help a lot of people online (personal issues). However, we have to live and not lose our place of residence and pay bills. I have a four small things on ecrater but, I am asking for a money order or cashiers check and well, we all know that people want convenience. So, no sales as of yet. I know about google check out systen, I haven't signed on, does anyone know about that, as well ? I am just asking for wisdom and some ideas for my Individual situation, that may Help Many Other Good Honest Sellers on here that have been through the new eBay wringer rules that continues to hurt the people that built them in the early years, throwing away Real Hard working people in America that can forget the American Dream as far as eBay as concerned in the current rules and control over the sellers that has been imposed and certainly has killed many great small businesses that I have personal knowledge of. They have no reasonable way to look or openly discuss individual circumstances set up - all sellers are numbers and that is what it has become. If you sell, you are OWNED by the buyers and eBay's rediculous rules that could be intended to squeeze out the small business owner, if not intended, they can review their results and find that this IS the bottom line and results of their current policies. Another question, very Important...WHEN (what year) did eBay put the 5 star rating into place ? I have sold off and on due to my illness and do not recall when that 'kill the small honest business man' policy into place ? Thanks for your time, SistaJewels

Pre-Requisite : Paypal & eBay are Synonymous No matter what anyone Says - since they are BOTH owned By eBay. You cannot Split Hairs. Now that this is out of the way : This question is for a family member. I would like to know, how does a Seller Protect themselves against people like this ? The person received the item. They showed their approval by posting a positive comment and 17 days later, they email telling the seller, that the ring has just been placed in the mail and is coming back for a refund. She complained about the VS Clarity being too clear..LOL..This is Clearly (pun intended), someone who has Zero knowledge of gemstones. It was VS or better ! They received what they paid for and then complained about the Great Quality !! wahhhh??? t ! Where do all the cretins come from or crawl out from ? Nevertheless, the item was sold for a nice profit but, knowing the results of sales by research in adavnce & buying correctly, it sold at about 1/10 it's value in retail. So, the buyer received a great deal - yet, retail is generally Always 10x more than you can expect on eBay, when it comes to Top Quality Jewelry..at least with this sellers site. What does Paypal/eBay Actually/Factually, have to say about THIS situation ? It is wrong, plain wrong for sellers to be treated so bad #1 in that, they cannot place negative feedback for Horrible buyers or those that 'play' with your money and time and do not pay ! Then, no bad feedback ? Worst ruling for sellers EVER made by eBay ! Among others over the past few years. I wonder who's side is correct ? I would REALLY like to hear Factual answers on this and what is to be expected, should he decide to fight this totally liar/buyer situation ? The buyer is always right in an Auction Style Real Auction ? No way, In person, I have been to many auctions and you are not allowed to get ANY refunds - period ! However, this seller is a GOOD person and has issued over $8,000 in refunds in the last 3 months during the Holiday time when the crazies come out - even though, 99.9% of the buuyers were Flat wrong since he has 100% of his items checked out by a gemologist friend that scopes the gems and identifies it as Natural/what it is & grading. Along with the Fact, that he has an expensive gem tester of his own.He is just trying to get his numbers up since being judged Unfairly by liar-buyers last January when snow DID keep him from shipping for a few days. Enough is enough and This situation is not Right at ALL on the buyers side and it is Completely 'Other reasons' to suit this lying buyer that are unknown however, the first of the month is on 3 days...hmm, how many of you other sellers see a pattern with this being your most often time of returns ? Obvious, Very. Thanks in advance to anyone that Knows what can be done to handle this Uprightly for a Seller with Integrity and works hard while taking care of a loved one that is unable to work and is just a small business man that has been upright in all of his dealings yet, has ran into the dregs of buyers since eBay became honest to the Buyer ALONE and to heck with the Honest Small Business Sellers that started eBay. It is ALL about squeezing out small business...sound Familiar ? This is why so many are sadly thinking that the American Dream is out of reach and eBay is first in line to help that become a reality as things stand for the small business sellers at this time. CHANGE back eBay ! Care again about who MADE YOU successful. Yea, like they are going to listen, while yahting around the world for making eBay favor large business..Money, it is always the bottom line and small sellers, you do not matter to eBay at ALL. You are a number. You are owned and your numbers are all that they look at, Never your circumstances. This particular seller that I am helping out by posting this, does have many 'good, honest, upright, repeat buyers' that have been buying from him since 1998. What other venue has the traffic like eBay momopoly ? This latest rash of idiots, generally started when eBay made unscrupulous (to the seller) IMO...business decisions within the past few years, adding insult upon insult to sellers that are Great Honest Sellers and have been around since you could get an email from Meg personally..lol..if you don't know what that is, you haven't been there long enough to recall. Fairness is so very Rare when it comes to sellers but, if anyone knows how he can maintain his stupid rating (another stupid idea considering the weather that some sellers have had to face, which made shipping early impossible - not this seller for this year, he did not live in those areas, I am just taking up for other sellers that probably got UNFAIR low star ratings due to circumstance).. how can he win this and still not be penalized in any way By Paypal OR eBay ? Geeze, it is pretty sick day when we are asking for ways to protect HONEST traders that get the shaft all the time from either lying buyers that just need rent $ or spent too much & got in trouble with their spouse and small honest business women and men take the smack in their wallet and then the almost Impossible demands that eBay has forced upon very good people as far as those stupid stars & NOT looking at circumstance - ONLY numbers, it is like a 3rd world democracy now.... If you sell on eBay, you no longer have your OWN business ! You are Owned ! I know that their theories of all of the control of YOUR supposed business, look good on paper but, in reality, they run You and everything you do in 'your' so-called business. In the good ole days, bad sellers did not last long and the good ones (like him) were very Rewarded for their hard work and did not have Unfair scrutiny placed upon HIS business as it was His back then. No Longer.. Nevertheless, about - THIS particular situation, what are the rules period ? Whether fair or unfair...to protect his reputation and have no penalties in the long run ? Unfair Facts, is unfortunately what I expect to hear for the answer... Since, I do not know, I simply have to go by his and other honest sellers getting unfair treatment by eBay, now since all of these obtuse rules have been set into place. Therefore, some good news will come as a surprise ! Thanks !

Many times, limited gift cards are not accepted by the company that you try to make a purchase from IE: pay as you go cards. Because of the companoes that have trial versions of items and I will NEVER accept a trial offer again since one that i did NOT sign up for a recurring fee or products took it upon themselves to make me a member that I did not want to be in the first place. I had to stop my paypal debit card and receive a new one due to these fraudulent people. Be aware, that if indeed, it is a trial offer, they make rake you over the coals. Many times, you can find the very same products on eBay without the strings attached and sometimrs, at a better cost to you.
