Cancelled automatic payments “reappearing” and taking unauthentic payments

I cancelled a recurring payment in late March. The payment was still debited from my account. I assumed this was an error, raised it and was refunded. I checked I had cancelled the authorisation correctly, could see that I had, and shrugged it off. In April *and* again in May, I was again debited the same payment, despite having cancelled and having dispute found in my favour in March. However, this time, PayPal said payment had “been processed correctly” so they were refusing to refund. I was spitting tacks, but they refused appeal, and I got on with life. However, I took opportunity to cancel a bunch of outdated/unnecessary automatic payment authorisations, and this time was careful to keep the email confirmations of those cancellations. However, I have just logged into account and at least two of the cancelled auto payment authorisations are appearing in my “active” list again. What the heck is going on?! To clarify, no unauthorised use of my account and no awareness of any security breaches. So why are cancelled auto payment authorisations being “reinstated” on my account?

Hello @GeorgieAg

Thank you for joining the PayPal Community Help!

Sorry to hear that you're getting charged for the canceled subscriptions/automatic payments. As you have already canceled the automatic payments, you would not be charged with any future payments. I would recommend you to check all your automatic payments and cancel any unwanted ones again.

You can also contact the merchant to check if the automatic payments are being reinstated from their end and request refund towards the charges debited after the cancelation.

As the payments were sent as part of a billing agreement/automatic payments you previously set up with the merchant, these will not come under unauthorized case. You can report these type of charges under billing issue. Please contact the PayPal team to see if they can reopen and update the case under billing issue. You can also provide the emails confirming the cancelation of automatic payment for further investigation. Here's the contact options to reach PayPal team : How do I contact PayPal Customer Service

Best wishes,

Bindu
