paypal used my paypal balance for an autoship agreement I had with the merchant. I authorized the use of a credit card. AFTER I questioned it the paypal rep sends me an email claiming that my paypal balance will first be accessed for the autoship payments. I canceled all my autoship payments and drained my paypal balance, not knowing what paypal will do next:(

OR just read the relevant section explaining why first?

Your preferred payment method for an automatic payment agreement will be used for transactions with that seller. If you have available balance in a linked Balance Account, that balance may be used before your preferred payment method, depending on your applicable automatic payment agreement with the seller.

Thank you! I never had any agreement for access to my paypal balance. I use a certain credit card always for all my merchant transactions including all paypal transactions when I use it to pay a merchant or payment for an authorized autoship. So what paypal did was not correct.

One of your merchants may well prefer balance to be used instead of cards when available, if so then it would be used as per my post above regardless of what you actually set it as.

Your information that the merchant makes the choice of how the paypal payment is to be made is FALSE.
The merchant has NOTHING to do with how the paypal payment by the person dealing with the merchant is processed. It is a contract between the person using paypal as a payment method and paypal. It is this person who DIRECTS how paypal will process the payment - e.g. if their paypal balance has to be used first or not or if some particular card in their paypal wallet is o be charged.
I have had a paypal account for over a decade and I also happen to know the legal side of things. I post to inform others as well. When gaslighting is a common occurrence, your diligence to post truthfully will be appreciated.

The agreement with the seller on an auto-payment to the seller, who has nothing to do with my paypal agreement with paypal, means that I can choose to pay the seller through other means like a direct charge or debit from a credit card or debit card. These are alternatives to using paypal. So instead of using paypal (which is convenient because my cards are stored in my paypal wallet and I don't have to enter the information online once again) I can choose to pay the merchant for a purchase or future auto shipment using a particular credit or debit card instead of paying through paypal. Paying through a debit card or credit card is always a choice while some merchants may exclude paypal as an option, or not accept certain cards.
