Gift Certificate Redemption #s

I am looking into the option of creating gift certificates for a website, and wasn't able to find how the redemption code is assigned.  Is this something that I can assign?

The redemption code is assigned from the PayPal end.

Thank you!  It is possible to get a list of the#s before they are asigned out?  Can I get a set list of #s that belong to me?

Unfortunately thats not possible as the redemption numbers are randomly generated and controlled on the PayPal end.

Looking for advice on best practices for selling gift certificates.

I tried them last year and there was a major nightmare when a recipient received a gift certificate via email on one email address and had a paypal account with a different email address. No matter what we did, no one could figure out how to redeem that cert. We tried adding that second email to the existing account, etc.. no matter what, it wouldn't work.

I ended up refunding the original purchaser and sulked away with my tail between my legs never to sell another GC again.

What's the secret?

I THINK the way I'll handle it is to put a very clear warning next to the button suggesting that specifying a recipient email address can be problematic and that it would be best to PRINT the GC and either hand deliver it or send the image over email privately.

Can you tell me how to get my payment? My customer handed me their GC. Now what do I do? They do not have a paypal account. I am a massage therapist, do not have a store. The GC was for services received.
