Processor Decline Codes

It would be extremely helpful for PayPal to publish a key to "Processor Decline" codes so we merchants could help a good customer resolve a problem with their credit card issuer (bank). A recent failed Virtuall Terminal transaction indicated that addressing, CVV and some other aspects were ageeeable, but there was some other error that was identified only by a code number.

Example: a solid customer's Visa card got rejected with little advisement as to what was the problem other than a "Processor Decline" code number of 15005 and mention of some other Code 0051. Not very helpful for customer to resolve the problem with their bank.

Q -- Is there a published list of error codes for Virtual Terminal credit card transactions that would help us advise customers how to resolve a credit card rejection issue?

Does anyone know where to find Processor Decline Codes so we can help a customer understand WHY their card was declined?  I just have an officer from a military base try to use his card for a large military contract order.  I need help!

15005: Processor Decline

  • This transaction cannot be processed.
  • Processor Response Code: 0051.
  • AVS: N - No.
  • CVV: M - Pass.

As for 0051 - The credit limit for this account has been exceeded.

Here is a list of the typical error messages generated by a payment processing company:

  • 0005 (The transaction was declined without explanation by the card issuer.)
  • 0013 (The transaction amount is greater than the maximum the issuer allows.)
  • 0014 (The issuer indicates that this card is not valid.)
  • 0043 (The card has been reported stolen.)
  • 0051 (The credit limit for this account has been exceeded.)
  • 0054 (The card is expired.)
  • 1015 (The credit card number was invalid.)
  • 1511 (Duplicate transaction attempt.)
  • 1899 (Timeout waiting for host response.)
  • 2075 (Approval from the card issuer's voice center is required to process this transaction.)
