What type or level of SSL certificate is required for IPN and other API services?

In your forum, I see that SSL is not required for any of your services, but that it is highly recommended in order to encrypt user data that is transmitted over the internet.

However, what I don't see is what requirements there might be (or not be) for SSL certificates, if one were to use them.

I have two options that I am considering:

1. An unsigned certificate --which can be provided for free by my web hosting provider (Arvixe.com).

2. A Comodo Positive SSL certificate, that I would buy from Namecheap (the $9 option on the 1st link, below), which appears to be the same as, but cheaper than the certificate being sold on Comodo's website (2nd link, below).

https://www.https://www.namecheap.com/security/ssl-certificates/comodo.aspx

https://www.positivessl.com/ssl-certificate-positivessl.php

And I have two usage scenarios in mind:

1. Use SSL for a sub-domain that is used exclusively for an 'under development' website.

2. Use SSL for a production domain, once development testing has been completed.

As you can see from the first link I provided, there are many levels of SSL available (there are even more levels being sold by other providers).

My questions are:

1. Will an unsigned certificate work with either or both of my intended usage scenarios?

2. Is the Comodo Positive SSL certificate sufficent for either or both of my intended usage scenarios?

3. If the Comodo Positive SSL certificate is not sufficent for either scenario, which level of SSL would be required for each of my intended usage scenarios?

Thanks much in advance, for answers to these questions!
