I am wanting to rent a vacation rental off of Craigslist, and the seller says they accept PayPal. If I send them payment through PayPal,and it turns out to be a scam, will PayPal refund my money? Thank you!

PayPal doesn't protect a buyer from scams.  Scams happen because a buyer is not very knowledgable about PayPal policies and and very knowedgable seller and very smart seller knows how to take avantage of the buyer's quest for a deal and also of the buyer's lack of knowledge about a deal.

Click on Legal at the bottom of the page and then User Agrement.  Next, make sure you really understand PayPal policies relating to buyers and sellers.

If you have specific details about your deal, then post the details and your specific ideas of the scam.

Now I am really confused as I called PayPal and they told me yes. I had already posted here, when they finally answered my call, but I left the question up because I wanted something in writing, after reading they don't cover actual real estate.

Ok,thank you! I thought that might be the case, but was thrown off guard by a PayPal claims person telling me that it would be covered. You would think the employees would know the correct answer!

Customer service reps have been know to give various non-valid answers.  It may be partly when a caller does not accurately describe the problem or because the caller is not specific about the  problem. It also happens when the rep just isn't familiar with all the policies and special circumstances.

As for rental, my suggestion is to make sure you trust the rental company.  A good way to find out about the company is with a phone call.  The company should have a published physical business address and phone number.  Don't count on PayPal to cover for your lack of research.

PayPal has good buyer protection for physical item not received.  Beyond that, much less.

When something doesn't go right with rentals, it's hard to prove fault.

On the other hand, if you use a credit card it's much better.  Always pay directly with a credit card.  Don't pass your credit card payment though PayPal.

Ask the PayPal person for details.

You need to specify EXACTLY what YOU mean by protection and then ask those very specific questions to the PayPal rep.

Seriously, what do you expect for protection?  In what circumstances would you need protection?  So far you question was more in generalities than specifics.

Even with tangible items, PayPal protection is extremely limited.  Details matter.  That's why it is so important review and understand PayPal polices in the User Agreement.
