calculating shipping before invoicing

We run a Facebook boutique selling home decor. Each item is a different size/weight etc. Shipping is calculated through USPS based on the measurements of the package, the weight, and the zip code of the recipient. My question is...how do I ensure that I charge enough to cover the shipping costs if I don't know the buyer's zip code until they have already paid their invoice? For example, A customer yesterday purchased an item to be shipped to California. We had estimated shipping costs based on size and weight, and used that to invoice, but because it was going from Missouri all the way to California, the actual shipping cost ended up being way more than our estimate. Aside from just estimating higher and hoping for the best, is there a way to set it up so that shipping is calculated AFTER the buyer types in their zip code or something?

With PayPal's Payments Standard - calculating shipping costs can be challenge and there's only so much you can do with the available tools. You may want to look into a 3rd party shopping cart or service that offers the type of shipping options/features you need.
