PayPal Smart Connect Synchrony Bank phishing?

My PayPal Smart Connect account is current and has been for months. I received phone calls at my home number supposedly from Synchrony Bank stating my account is past due and to call immediately. When I call, I get a recording that says enter my account number. If I don’t have my account number, please enter my social security number. No where can I find my account number and I’m not going to put enter my social security number when there is a high probability of fraud.

I called customer service at PayPal a few weeks ago. After fighting my way through the voicemail system, I finally got a live person. After hearing my story, she said that it was probably fraudulent and I was smart to not enter my social security number. She then said she would connect me to PayPal Smart Connect. After an extended hold period, I was diverted to the same voicemail that I got when I returned the apparent fraudulent calls at home.  So I hung up.

Now I get a message from Identity Guard that my credit has been dinged. My account is, and always has been in good standing.

I don’t know what to do. For a start, how do get my account number?

Hi DHT,

I apologize for any confusion this may have caused you and would be happy to assist you further.

You can find your PayPal Credit account number in the top left corner of your monthly statement, which you can view or download by logging into your account at www.PayPal.com. Once logged in, you can select 'PayPal Credit' and then click 'view statements' to find your account number.

Hopefully this helps!

Ashley:

Wow, thanks for quick reply. But it doesn't help.

I took screen shots of all this but I can't figure out how to attach.

On the main screen I get when I log in, there is no place on it to select "PayPal Credit".  It's the modern screen with the blue banner. There is an option to go the Classic Site, which I also tried. No "PayPal Credit" option there either.

I did select the statements, but no account number there.

I can send you screen shots of all of this, if you give me instructions.

I look forward to your reply.

I also have received 2 calls this week on my cell from 678-518-3097.  Knew my account was current and that any previous correspondence had been thru emails, therefore didnt return the calls.

Thanks!

I have been getting the same calls from these numbers. My account is up to date. This is quite annoying. They call daily and there is no option to speak to a real person.

There is no confusion here.  They have called me at least 5 tmes a day for the last 5-6 months.  I have told them to stop at no avail.  I finally told them to only contact me in writing.  They keep calling!  I told them I shouldn't have to tell them my detailed personal information on a call they've placed to me at my home!  I told them only a scam would require me to do that and I wouldn't do it.

Good luck calling though.  It's an even more frustrating experience.  Prepare to be on the phone for hours and to probably be hung on.  They may even say it was accidental when you call back but it will clearly have been because you weren't accepting their nonsensical answers to your questions!  Be especially wary if you are speaking with Betty Davis...although I'm sure that's not her real name!  She will probably hang up on you and then put in their system that there was a bad connection.  That excuse would only be valid if Betty's fingers hitting the "END" button qualify as a bad connection.

My advice is to run, not walk. away from Paypal Smart Connect and Synchrony Bank.  Paypal has always been a trusted company to me but they have lots of work to do in this area.  Any line of credit that you have to search high and low for a link to make a payment should tip us off to how bad they are!  Not worth the very small convenience.
