My uncle cancelled a flight ticket paid with PayPal due to an error. Any chance for a refund?

Hi PayPal community,
my uncle wanted to book an Alitalia flight for his daughter trough edreams.com (using his PayPal account, I'm writing because he doesn't use the internet much).
Without noticing he put his details (name, surname) instead of hers and paid for the ticket.
He later realized the mistake and contacted the customer service, in order to solve the issue, and they told him that he couldn't change the ticket name and the only thing he could do was to cancel the ticket, which is what he did.
According to edreams of the 400€ he paid, he should get back less than 50€. Alitalia basically told him that since he didn't book trough their site, they are not responsible for anything.
I know that flight tickets are not covered for buyer protection, (as outlined in the user agreement), but I was wondering anyway, since he didn't get what he paid for (and they certainly gave his ticket to someone else), if there was any chance of a refund through PayPal.
He did the payment about 30 days ago, so he's should still be within the terms to open a complaint.

He shuld call Paypal and ask,or if he has used his credit card,call the cc issuer.
Yo cannot assume the company sold his ticket and recoup its loss,when was the flight and when did he cancel?
What are the terms,what does it say about cancellation ,did he read them before booking the ticket

If we are able to cancel your booking, it won't necessarily lead to a refund, especially if you booked an economy ticket, as this type of fare is normally 100% non-refundable in the case of cancellation.
What are the cancellation policies?
As most affordable airline tickets are also the most restrictive, the airlines impose very strict conditions in the case of cancellations i.e. some airlines may allow a partial refund if the flight is cancelled prior to the departure date, but not once the flight date has passed. In other cases, fares are so restrictive that it may not be possible to get any refund on unused tickets, or the carrier may charge a penalty for cancelling and refunding.
If your ticket is refundable, we will handle your voluntary cancellation free of charge if you booked a Standard or Premium Option. Otherwise, eDreams will charge 50$ administration fee per ticket.
How do I cancel my booking?
We can only cancel tickets with regular airlines such as British Airways, American Airlines, Air France. If you're travelling with a Low Cost carrier, please contact the airline to request your cancellation.
