Hey Everybody!
In an effort to make things easier to find and research, I'm going to consolidate as many threads as possible where we have examples of people trying to defraud hard working sellers (Craigslist emails, 'PayPal' emails asking you to send money outside of PayPal, etc). This will also be used as a master thread for future posts regarding this same situation.
When you post your examples here, please remember to not include last names or contact information of whoever is sending these emails. There's no way to confirm if that person has been defrauded as well and the name is being used fraudulently.
Thanks for your cooperation and remember, keep the conversation productive, on task, and above all, keep it clean. I know these things can be difficult and frustrating, but bleep filled posts or posts that look like government redacted files will never benefit anyone. 😄
Andy

I am trying to sell a ring on Craigs List and someone responded. She wants to purchase it through paypal. I just noticed the state she wants it shipped to has changed. I was leery before this but now I'm sure it's a scam. Is anyone familiar with this kind of scam? The name she is using is Jennifer <removed>.

I also listed a set of rings on Craigslist and this JENNIFER <removed> bought them!!! I am absolutely SICK, because I sold the rings for a friend of mine for $1500. Now JENNIFER <removed> wants me to send via Western Union $400 to Dami <removed> in Nigeria. What can we do about these people? I don't have the money to give to my friend for her rings.

I am also fighting a very similar battle. I sold a set of rings on Craigslist for a friend of mine. They paid by PayPal, asked they be shipped via UPS overnight, which I PAID FOR out of my account for a total of $137.00 I received the same verification from this so called paypal, then got the same email stating an additional 400.00 had been removed from her account and now the so called paypal and her want me to send the 400.00 via Western Union to a Dami <removed> in Nigeria. Needless to say the rings are gone and I have NO money to pay my friend for her rings.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY WESTERN UNION WIRES TO BUYERS WHO CLAIM TO SEND YOU EXTRA MONEY. They will send you spoofed PayPal emails. If the transaction doesn't show in your PayPal account, it doesn't exist, no matter what their sob stories and excuses are.
To see how these scams end up, please read https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B9lkBpZ3Bj5dN2E3ODc3N2MtZGJmNC00O.... I knew it was a scam and strung it along to get a full documentation of how they work their scams. People are still falling for this, but DON'T!!!!

Thank you very much for posting this! I was just contacted by someone using the first name Janet, and found it to be sort-of suspicious becuase I have a buy-it-now feature on my eBay listing, and she was offering $5 more, but in the off-chance she was an idiot, I replied asking why she didn't just buy it now. She has not responded, but I'm so glad I looked this up because her e-mail address and just the way she words her e-mails look legit. I'm so glad I didn't lose my Xbox to this scammer!

Scam : Bought a video-card of ebay, the price was too good to be true ( right under 250$) and it was a seller with 0 feedback and registered on the same day, but hey, with ebay buyer protection I though if anything will go wrong I can be covered, beside I was also once a brand new seller on ebay, so I though that discrimination like this was unfair from my part. So far it appears to be wrong.
I bought the item with "buy it now" on may 26th. On may 27th the seller contacted me via email saying that he shipped the item and that it will arrive in 5-10 buinsess days. Well I was waiting for the item to arrive, and on June 3rd, after 5pm ( my local mail office got closed already) he posted a confirmation number that some item was delivered to my town on 31st of may. Well I sure didn't receive it. So I contacted the seller - got no response via email, via ebay and via phone number that ebay provided me with. I also went to my local post office on the very next day and they say that some item was delivered to some adress at oberlin at 16:41pm, although my post was delivered at around 12pm, also there was no weight or size properties that are usually present when usps delivers a box ( and a 3-slot video card should weight around 5 pounds). Well ebay didnt allow me to open the case because the guy posted a random confirmation number after a whole WEEK after the item supposedly shipped, so I've opened a dispute with paypal, but it appears that my chances of winning the case are slim just because of that confirmation number that doesn't indicate anything besides the town and the zipcode. I'm going to try my luck tomorrow with the post office to see if the mailman who was delivering the package or whatever it could be remembers where was the delivery made, and go from there. But I can't belive that such a huge loophole in the buyer protection exicst and ebay nor paypal seem to really care about it.
