Transaction confirmation telling me I'll be billed with Bill Me Later

For several (not all) of the last few transactions I've made using PayPal, I've subsequently received an email confirmation of transaction which says: (this is a paste from an actual email I received today with the amount redacted)

"You've sent a payment of $xxx.xx USD to HP Home & Home Office Store. The payment will be processed when HP Home & Home Office Store fills your order.
You'll be billed with Bill Me Later®, a PayPal service through your PayPal account. We'll send you an email when your statement is ready. For more information, or to schedule a payment to Bill Me Later, just visit PayPal."

The problem is that I have nothing to do with Bill Me Later.  I've never used it and do not want to use it.  I've checked my settings and they seem correct and I have no balance outstanding.  Some transactions do not yield this email.

So far, it looks like the transactions are processed correctly...i.e. they hit my bank account directly, so no harm is done other than the time it has taken to monitor the transactions and make sure they go through correctly.  This extra time adds an element of expense that makes other....less time-consuming methods....look more attractive.

I've tried emailing PayPal to no avail, and I'm about to stop using the service because of this.  I'm a retired software developer and my experience is that when something like this is malfunctioning, how it manifests itself next is unpredicatable. That scares me when it comes to money.

Does anyone have any way to a) make sure I'm fullly de-linked from Bill Me Later, or b) communicate with PayPal to ask them to look into it?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi jcLQ, and welcome to the forums!

There is a known issue affecting some folks where this messaging appears in the email, though the payment funding method was not Bill Me Later. You can double-check what funding method was used by logging into your PayPal account and looking at the History page. Click the plus sign next to the relevant purchase, and it will show you if a card or bank was used.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Our technicians are working on fixing this as soon as possible!
