So several months ago I have to give my ssn to paypal to withdraw some money. Now that I Never use that feature at all, I gave a call to paypal customer service and they said we cannot remove the ssn which is utterly ridiculous. THey did however say if you close your payapl account, your ssn will be removed. Is this true and any suggestions?

Your SSN is for identification and more, so if you remove yoru SSN you could no longer maintain PayPal identification, so you would need to close your account. Close your account like PayPal indiciates if you want to remove your SSN from the site. After that just deal in cash payments so there is no record of your finances.

Probably not as your email and SSN would still be in the PayPal system
Even if you opened a new account you would need a SSN for full access and then that would like back to the old account.
You could phone PayPal support and ask for details.

why would most people want to verify their identity to begin with? its bad enough I had to give my phone number when making my account already. we definitly shouldn't need to put our ssn into anything on a computer. that should only ever be put down on paper for things such as applying for a bank account or a job. putting it into any computer is just bad security practice.

You are so FUNNY,where have you been Flintstone?
anything you put on paper with bank, retail stores, brokerage firms are all entered into the computer.
SS is needed to better identify you as a US resident and US citizen,SS number is needed to generate tax documents if needed.
if you dont want to give away your SS number, then use cash or money order or check.

The correct answer is NO, paypal does not need this information as they are not a financial institution. However, if you provide it then they may offer credit cards to you preapproved and potentially report to a credit agency. Google this question for more information. I do not want my account to be restricted by being too loud in the forums. In the past when I end a relationship with a creditor I send a demand letter asking that my information is purged. I send it certified with signature delivery confirmation via USPS; it's just $3.
God Bless
