having problems with error 404 with customers paying online for goods they can place order but does not go back to site my host says its a paypal promblem and need to check my settings in paypal

Could you check your settings in your PayPal account? There might be a setup there for the link for your site after check out. Or perhaps PayPal is currently having issues with that link back functionality. Could you please double check these items and let us know if those are okay?

404 is basically a page not found - sounds like you're there's an mistake in the return URL setting.
In your Account Profile under My selling tools, you should see website preferences, click on "Update". Make sure you have Auto Return enabled, below that is where you input the Return URL, you must use the full path.
In addition, if you have used the online button creator to generate "hosted" item button code, in Step 3 of the process there is a place to enter a return URL, the box has to be checked and then you input the URL you want customers to return to. This can be the same URL as in your Profile or a different one for that particular item.
