Potential fraud/scam on iPad purchased on Facebook Marketplace

Hi community,
I recently paid £800 on PayPal to a seller who had listed an 11 inch iPad Pro 2018 1TB on Facebook Marketplace.
The seller was a woman who put me in touch with her "boyfriend" as he was the one selling the item.
He spoke to me on Whatsapp to cut a deal. Here's where things started getting weird.
I asked him to send me photos of the iPad to confirm, and what he sent as photos was different to what was listed.
The Facebook listing said 11 inch, but the photos on the listing showed 12 inch, so I asked him to confirm which it was. He showed me photos of the 11 inch iPad and said it was indeed the 11 inch, and that the 12 inch photos were incorrectly posted.
So anyway, I paid him after much debate, and the iPad arrived a day later (maybe Covid). To my surprise, he had sent me the 12 inch model instead of the 11 inch model. The 12 inch model was wifi only and had 64gb of storage.
So today I messaged him on Whatsapp (did I mention he's said he can't take calls because he's on a tablet?) and told him that he has sent me the wrong model. This was his response:
"Could you please take a picture of the iPad you received? I've had another message saying the same from the buyer of the 12..9". I'm offering you a refund or a swap, more than happy to do either. I've already spoke with the other buyer who purchased the one you've received and explained the situation, he also wants the one you've received. So i can take them back and swap them over, the money doesn't even get released to my account until you get what you've paid for."
So he now wants me to send the iPad back to him (the return address is different to what he had written on the parcel) so he can swap them. Am I the only one that smells something rotten here? Am I at potential risk of not getting my money back in any scenario? Should I send the iPad to a completely different return address (it's close to where I live so I offered to drop it, but he said there will be no proof of postage)?
