Fee Calculation

I sold some hobby stuff.  The price was $135.  I figured the fee should have been 4.22 (135*.029 + .30).  However I was charged 5.57 instead.

So why was it that amount?

I am trying to add the fee to the cost of items being sold, so I need to understand the fee arrangement.

Thanks

Because the same 'not -so-bright' people that run Ebay also run Paypal. Ebay is not doing well so they are taking it out in Paypal fees. Both companies are in decline due to poor management decisions.

jaybeckham,

Based on the information you provided, it appears you are not located in the same country as your buyer.  How can I tell this?

If you're paid from outside of your own country, an additional 1% cross-border fee applies.  That would make the fee essentially 3.9% + $0.30 USD.  Compared for a $135 payment, that would equal out to $5.57.

More questions on fees?  Check out our FAQ, which covers the Cros-Border fee and more!

Thanks!

Just started re-selling on ebay. Went to my PayPal account to wrap things up and surprise ... mysterious fees appeared with no explanation and none to be found anywhere. Also got hit for a tracking fee I didn't ask for. Saw someone say the fees link was at the bottom of each page. That wasn't all that clear, what came up wasn't all that clear either, and I'm only finding all this out by digging through the site and now finding this forum. Your chat feature isn't working. Now still digging while I'm writing this I see a post from you about Micropayments and I'm checking that out. (Fees:  Frequently Asked Questions Jun-09-2011). Maybe your forum post should be on PayPal's opening page. Your post was more informative than the whole site. I have to agree with many of the posts though that PayPal is doing a poor job at informing customers about fees and processes. Not like it used to be. It's still a good service but my recent experience now was disappointing.

Thank you for the compliment, I'm glad you felt the FAQ was informative, and I'm sorry the www.paypal.com/fees page wasn't as helpful as you had hoped.  As for the chat feature, well, we don't have one (I wish we did!).  We do have Sarah, which is a computer program designed to answer common questions.  Sorry if she's not up and running at the moment, but it looks like she is now.

As for the "tracking fee" you mention, both PayPal and eBay doesn't have any such fee.  It sounds like you may have purchased a shipping label at some point. If you view the details of the transaction in PayPal, it should have more information for you to look through.

Thanks!

Adrian
