Outstanding balance from FileServe - is this a scam?

I signed up for a file sharing service called FileServe some months ago. I used a visa gift card to pay for it since I was only planning on using it for a month and unsubscribing. But I forgot to unsubscribe and owe something like $90 according to emails from paypal. I'm pretty sure the email is legitimate since it addresses me by my full name and doesn't ask me for an personal information.

Obviously, forgetting I had the monthly plan was my fault, but when I went to my fileserve account to unsubscribe from their paid service, it says my account is a "free account." So if I don't have premium services to begin with, what am I actually paying for? I'm guessing they downgraded my account the second they saw that I didn't pay for the month. But they obviously decided it was okay to keep charging me. If there is nothing for me to unsubscribe from, how am I supposed to stop the charges from continuing to accumulate?

Furthermore, I just checked my paypal account and it says that I have no outstanding payments and haven't for the past 3 months, so what gives? I emailed FileServe to but I'm doubtful I'll receive an answer.

jsd- Sorry that you're having to deal with this situation.  If you have a subscription payment, we verify the card when it's due.  Since it's a credit card we can find out immediately if there's a balance, and if not then the charge doesn't go through.  So there's no time that your PayPal balance would wind up negative from a missed subscription.  If you were receiving emails from "PayPal" telling you you owed $90, but your account balance doesn't show you owing anything, I thinking those emails were not legitimate.

I would recommend forwarding those to spoof@paypal.com because we like to try to keep track of who's using our name, and if your account with them is 'free', then I wouldn't worry about it too much.  You can always contact PayPal customer service and we can see if we have a contact phone number if you wanted to try and get in touch with them, but there's no guarantee on that. 😞
