NSF Fee, whatever happened to automatically going to the backup funding source?

Hi all,
In the past, I've made some transactions on paypal where I ended up having too little in my bank account, and these were automatically redirected onto my credit card. I thought this was what it meant to have a backup funding source. Recently I made a tiny $5 purchase (some facebook points), which went through (processed successfully), but due to other activity in my account, my balance fell below what was required. The payment was returned as NSF and I was charged $42.50. I specifically remember it being mentioned when I signed up for paypal that the credit card was a backup source in the event the bank account had insufficient funds, and (unless there was some gross misunderstanding) I have made payments where it switched to the credit card automatically in that case. So I wonder what is going on here.

Nothing to add. But they just did the exact same thing to me.
Except, I had made a payment to an incorrect email address - and then cancelled. So my paypal account should have had that money returned to it. When I then made a corrected transaction, they charged my bank account again (double dipping) - causing me to incur a $40 NSF fee. And yes, I also have a backup credit card.
This is the second time that I've been ripped off by Paypal. I am never using them again. And I will tell everyone I know not to use them.

Yep. They went through my bank account and bypassed my CC completely this time around.
Again.
Aside from the NSF, I also bought something else and PayPal has put me deeper in the negative. It was resolved for a very short time, but now they're going backwards.
And nothing is being done. What gives, PayPal?

This happened to me as well over the last week. In fact, I was dinged 3(!) times in the last 10 days. I sent a dispute form in via the website, but there has been no reply, nothing. It is not even listed on the open cases page. Why are you expected to have a back up source if it's not going to be utilized. At the very least I expect a reply from them explaining how the mechanics work.
