Question about Debit Cards

I tried to add my debit card to my account, it does say "Add a Credit or Debit Card" , yet the choices are only Visa, MC and AE. Is this the same card I received when I opened my bank account, that I use at the ATM Machine, Or is it one of those CC's you buy and load with money, after which you can use it like a normal CC? If I can add my TD Canada Trust Debit card to my PP account..that would be great and would save a lot of time.

Thanks, Mike

I think that option is only good for U.S. debit cards which are different than the debit cards in Canada.

Autumn is correct - the traditional debit card of Canada is not something that can be added to PayPal yet Smiley Sad

In order to be added, it must be branded with one of the above mentioned types, have a CVV (security) code, and all other features normally associated with a credit card.

In regards to adding a branded pre-paid card, we don't normally recommend that either.  Pre-paid cards seldom pass our rigorous security checks and may not support a charge even if they are successfully added and confirmed.  Furthermore, we are required to send refunds back to a card if the card was used to make the original purchase - and if the pre-paid or gift card has been thrown away, well, it's not fun for you.  Smiley Sad

Thanks for the clairification regarding Canadian debit cards. It's dissapointing that this service isn't available. 😞

I have a related question regarding pre-paid credit cards from a Canadian Money Mart. I would have started a new thread but apparently I don't have those kinds of priveledges on the forums yet. The card is associated with a billing address and has a PIN number. I would like to transfer money from my PayPal account to this card. Please let me know if this is possible.

Thank you!

krys263 -

Withdrawals to cards aren't currently available for our members in Canada (or the US either).  I understand from your other thread you have a bank account on file - my suggestion would be to withdraw funds to your bank and then go from there to load the card.  I know it probably wouldn't be as fast as sending money directly to the card, but it is still possible.

Hope this helps,

Adrian

Hey Adrian, thanks for taking the time to reply.

Unfortunately, not all Canadian banks include pre-paid credit cards on their "payment" options, and my bank is one of the ones that doesn't. So, I can't load the payment online. I would have to go to a different bank that specifically deals with Mastercard. However, I plan on visiting my bank in the next couple of days, maybe I can talk to them about how to get this done.

If I may make another point; PayPal used to be a lot more convenient, but I'm finding that I have to jump through so many hoops to get my money it's less and less so. It seems the dealing with PayPal is more and more dependent on having a conventional credit card, something that most people in society are trying to move away from. Household debts are at ridiculous levels these days and the secret is out about credit cards and their ridiculous interest rates. Many stores no longer even accept them as the card companies charge so much just for the privilege. It seems to me that PayPal is moving further away from it's customer base. I started another thread related to this point; to do certain transactions online, (like paying for an MMORPG or a plane ticket) PayPal requires that you have a conventional credit card attached to your account. Well, if I have a credit card, why would I even be using PayPal for these online purchases? If PayPal keeps going the way it is, it's going to make itself unusable and obsolete.

Just link to your bank account and you can easily transfer the money there.  I do and it is usually done in about 2 to 3 business days for my account here in Canada.  You can also link up your credit card to make payments from but not to receive payments.

I really would not be trying to involve a debit card or credit card anyways because if you look at the fee information, if you ever need to pay/send money to someone, there is a fee involved if it is from a credit card or debit card so I think it's much smarter to simply link to your bank account.  I've been doing it that way for years without any problem.  If you're worried about the access to your account, you could always have one account just for paypal use and only keep as much in there as you need for purchases.

You must choose not to link a debit card, but to link a canadian bank account : ) I have linked my scotiabank account. Weird thing is, the money is gone from Scotia, but not in my PayPal yet.

I was just wondering,

If I linked my debit card to my account, can I still use paypal even though I don't have enough money in my bank account at the time purchase?
