Hi folks If I buy something from gumtree via a private sale and pay via pay pal is this a protected purchase? What if they don’t post the item?

Pay with the "Paying for an item or a service" option to get buyer protection and even then buyer protection has its limitations. Please read the t&c's:

You can also pay via a PayPal invoice to get buyer protection.
