Clever Scam by Digital River

A Serena <removed> sent me an email stating that she had accidentally deposited $50 into my PayPal account that she meant to deposit into her friend's account. She asked me to please return the money. I checked my bank and the $50 showed up but I was locked out of my account. Serena sent me another imploring email. I finally took pity on her and approved her request for the PayPal payment. In doing so, I learned that "Serena" was Digital River and by approving what I thought was a return of her money, I actually had approved a reoccurring payment of $49 to Digital River. I immediately canceled the transaction. I hope it holds.
Has anyone else been drawn into this scheme?

Check if you had a subscription set up.
Click on the profile tab (icon next to log out) > Click on payments third option along on the thick blue band top of page > "manage pre-approved payments.''

Kudos / Solution appreciated.

It seems I also got bitten by the same "Digital-Rivers" AVG scam, i only found out when I asked AVG why I never got an authorization code.
From what I read in the forums is that paypal know very well about this scam and it looks like they do not care.
I find it very distressing as previously would have trusted Paypal 1000%.
Help.

Hi,
I cannot tell you where to go to get your money returned. But, YOU MUST GO TO YOUR PAYEES ON PAYPAL AND DELETE THOSE YOU DON'T WISH TO HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR ACCOUNT. In particular AVG, or any payees you may have only used once with AVG ~ as they appear to be attached to Digital River !! It's a well known fact here that Digital River are scamming money from Paypal accounts, through AVG for some years now. I am very dubious now using Paypal. I also could not get my monies paid out through Paypal when this happened to me..

In my case the security software was Kaspersky (an excellent product) but again the problem is with Digital River. Prior to Kaspersky switching thier billing to Digital River I had no problems, a manual renewal reminder came from Kaspersky each year (for several years) about a month before it was due, the amount was around £12.99 (from memory). Then they switched to DRI. In 2019 6 weeks before it was due £59.99 was taken from my account. I investigated when I spotted it - DRI without any authority had changed me from a 2PC subscription with manual renewal to a 5PC subscription with auto-renewal - no approval and no notice. I changed it back to what it should have been - then November 2020 the same was done again. I'm still trying to get my money back - I don't even have Kaspersky anymore (cancelled BEFORE renewal was due ) but still I'm stuck paying for it. Nothing wrong with Kaspersky itself - I cancelled only to avoid the DRI scam - but caught again even after cancelling! Bet they charge me again in November 2021!

Me again - have realised I did not make one thing clear in the above - Pay-Pal not involved - the charge went direct to my Barclays debit card both times. Only put it here as I spotted this report (I am a PayPal user).

I understand ~ I hope then you removed them " Digital River / AVG , from your payees on your bank account ! Or 2 years later, you could find yourself in the same situation again..
Regards.
Seoda.
