confused about PayPal Here vs Zettle, accounts, money delays, and keyed, swipe, chip, tap

It appears very confusing about what PayPal Here is, Zettle is, which app to use, etc. It appears PayPal is transitioning to Zettle.

Zettle appears to have several major drawbacks:

1. Does not allow swipe. PayPal Here card reader (which I found at https://us.paypal-here.com/paypal-chip-and-swipe/ on 02/21/2022 called "Chip and Swipe Reader" apparently does, but does not accept tap. Also this FAQ https://www.paypal.com/us/smarthelp/article/faq3061 says it is Part Number: PCSUSDCRT. But I fear this is about to be discontinued.)

2. 24 hours until you get your money. The money goes to zettle, not your paypal account, and then gets transferred from your Zettle account to your PayPal account. I am used to my money being in my PayPal account instantly. That's what I want.

It appears Zettle does allow key entry, which is good, for an additional fee. I think PayPal Here card reader also had an extra fee for keyed.

It also appears you need the Zettle app, not your PayPal Here app (which I already have) to use Zettle.

What have I got right and what have I got wrong? Are we really giving up the money going straight into our account immediately forever? No other option?

Hello, @MontgomeryMinds. Thanks for taking the time to mention your questions and concerns here on the PayPal Community Forum. I hope the following information is helpful.

For customers who want the ability to take credit card payments in person but don't already have PayPal Here, the option to use PayPal Zettle was made available about a year ago, and any new customers will need to use that app. Customers who have PayPal Here, such as yourself, and are using it currently may continue to use it.

The PayPal Zettle card reader does not include the ability to swipe cards because it's a less secure means of taking card payments. Excluding the ability to swipe cards also reduces costs for sellers and for PayPal. Cards may be inserted, tapped or other forms of contactless payment may be used. In addition to being more secure, the Zettle card reader is faster. You can see more information at https://www.paypal.com/business/pos/payments/card-reader.

While funds collected using the PayPal Zettle app are swept to a linked PayPal account once every 24 hours, the availability of funds is generally much faster than with PayPal Here where funds could be held up to 30 days depending on the method used to run a card. More information about PayPal Here Reserves may be found at https://www.paypal.com/smarthelp/article/faq3420.

Because Zettle is based on an entirely different method of accepting card payments, it does require the Zettle app. The two apps are not interchangeable. However, there are many more features available in the Zettle app such as staff accounts, product inventory, customizing receipts, and integration with QuickBooks, Shopify, BigCommerce and WooCommerce.

I hope this is helpful. Thanks for being a part of the PayPal Community!
.
Sincerely,

Michael

Will PayPal Here customers be forced to transition to Zettle in the future?

Hello, @JeffS10413. That is a very good question! PayPal has no plans at this time to require PayPal Here users to switch to PayPal Zettle. Thanks for taking the time to visit the PayPal Community Forum!

Sincerely,

Michael
