Does anyone know if Paypal requires us to get a VAT number? I got an email saying I should enter a VAT number but under South African law I'm not required to based on the VAT info (I earn waaaaay under the VAT turn over requirements)? I understand the 15% VAT is on Paypal's side but I need clarification on the email about now inserting a VAT number? Thank you!

Have you been able to find anything out? I am in a similar position. I earn a small income from a hobby and am nowhere near the income where one needs to register for vat. Being vat registered creates millions of expensive problems I think so if this is required I may as well give up and become another one of the South African unemployed. It's a nightmare.

Hi!
What I understand when I contacted Paypal is the 15% is on their side. Only if you want to claim that money back do you need to register as VAT company and then can claim for that 15% via SARS. I actually did get paid via Mexico (pesos) last week and it was converted to dollars and I didn't see a huge difference with fees or the amount I received . So I wouldn't stress too much - just carry on 🙂 That is what I am doing:)
