Advice about selling a car, recieving payment via paypal.

I'm selling my car (not on ebay) and have had someone offering to buy via paypal and send someone for collection. I know all about these scams where buyers say I'll pay with a bankers draft and add shipping fees and the seller has to sort it out with the shippers. I've always disregarded these and said cash on collection only but this one says he'll pay in full via paypal and arrange for someone to collect. I just want to know where I stand on the security of the payment. Do I have to wait any particular time for it to clear? Can he cancel payment once cleared or request a refund?

You hear so many scams going on I just want to be sure, I'm already dubious due to the fact he's saying he'll send someone else to collect. Or am I just best sticking to my guns and demanding cash on collection? Please help.

Just received this today and a quick look up on google brought me here, as it did a lot of people. Great advice, I was not aware buyer/seller for cars are not protected by PayPal I thought it was a safe option. I really want it to be a surprise for my Daughter i won't let her know anything about it until it gets delivered to her, i am sure she will be more than happy with it. I insisted on PayPal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my PayPal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it,Get back to me with your PayPal email and the price so i can proceed with the payment quickly, and sorry if you don't have an Account, you sign-up for a PayPal personal account www.paypal.com it is very fast and easy to set up. And there is a shipping company pick up agent that will come for the pick up after the payment has been sorted out. Thanks Hmmmmm petty officer? More like a bar steward!

i just received this reply from someone interesting in my motorcycle for sale ... i thought it was suspicious so i told them to send me a bank e-transfer to my email accountor to send me a certified cheque or bank draft.  here it is ...

I received this exact same one.  Everybody should know on the internet not to do transactions like this..it's common sense.  But then again common sense is not common at all.

Yes, it would appear to be a scam.  The first response came from a Yahoo account the followup from a Gmail account. The Gmail account is disabled, so you will get a "delivery failure" notification but the email itself does not end up as spam when it comes into my Gmail account.

Since it appeared too-good-to-be-true, I did use Google and typed in the name "Benjamin <removed>" and the PenPal forum discussion came up.  This discussion has helped me understand this particular scam a little better.

I just received the same one for my motorcycle from a Benjamin <removed>, I googled his name and it brought me to this page. I thought it was a little suspicious too, glad I looked into it. I canceled the PayPal request. Thank you for this forum

Offered more than I was asking to cover charges, then said it would be picked up from someone in Nigeria............... whaaaaat..?

I just did a Google search on this guy as he had responed to an item I had for sale on Kajiji.  I found a post from someone else who was selling a motorcycle and I got the exact same email as they did, see below. This is a obviously a scam running under the name of Benjamin <removed>.  Just wanted to post this to help others from being scammed out of their merchandise.  Here's the email response I received:

Thanks for the mail.. I will be paying the 2.9% PayPal surcharge from my account. So i will be paying directly into your PayPal account without any delay, and i hope you have a paypal account.If you have one already, just send me the address to send it to, which is the email address you use for it , so once i receive the details i will go ahead with the payment through PayPal and then i will contact my shipping company after you get the payment. I will need your home address for the merchandise to be Picked Up by the Shipping Company..

Just had the same one from Tereza Thomas and suspected something was up. Who in their right mind would buy a 2nd hand car without seeing it?
