Payment did not go through, but card was still charged.

On December 20th, I tried to make a purchase to a store for a value of $999, using the $120 in my paypal account for a partial amount and charging the rest to my card. Initially I thought the order went through as I received a receipt of the order from the merchant, but they called me a day later saying they did not receive a payment and cancelled the order. Even though the payment didn't go through, I was still charged for the $879 from my bank account. I contacted paypal and they said that my card denied the money, so I contacted my bank who said the exact opposite stating that the money DID go through to paypal. And since my bank can't raise disputes with paypal I am stuck, and my money seemingly vanished. I am not sure what to do now, as I really need that money back since I do not have much.

So in your card account online, the $879 is not tagged as a pending preauthorization? It’s actually posted?

Yes it isn’t pending, I called my bank and they confirmed the transaction to PayPal was successful whilst PayPal claims my card denied the transaction. But the money was taken out of my account.

Do you see record of payment in PayPal? Or can you pull up the transaction in the Resolution Center to file a dispute? If not, call your card issuer about disputing it. It’s a debit card though, right? Not all debit cards provide buyer protection but check with the card issuer (call number on back of card). Also keep following up with PayPal. You’re bound to connect with a rep that will help.
