Does PayPal send text messages?

I received a text message from "PayPal" as follows: You sent a payment of $984.00 to Paul [removed] from your PayPal. It it's you reply "Y" if you didn't authorize this transaction cal[Removed. Phone #s not permitted] Does this seem suspicious to anyone?

If you receive any message about activity on a PayPal account, the safest way to confirm the message's validity is to log in to a PayPal account via the PayPal website (not using the links in the message received). I just received the same text message. What the hell?!! I want to know how they got or who sold my information. How did the scammer know I had a PayPal account and my phone number?!
