I've received a debt letter from Wescot stating I owe money to PayPal which I haven't ever had a PayPal credit account etc. I messaged PayPal and they have advised a zero balance. Has anyone else had one of these letters?

Hello @Ashr84

Thank you for joining the PayPal Help Community and posting your question here!

I can see how receiving the email about a debt would be concerning to you. It's good to know that you've reached the support team to get it clarified. If you receive any email about activity on a PayPal account, the safest way to confirm the email’s validity is to log in to a PayPal account via the PayPal website (not using the links in the email received). Any of the activity reported in the email will be available to view in your PayPal account. You can always report these fake emails to PayPal to get it investigated further. Here's the article with the information on how to spot fake emails or websites and report it to PayPal : How do I spot a fake, fraudulent, or phishing PayPal email or website?

I hope this information helps,

Bindu

Hi Bindu, it is a physical letter that has come thru the post and not an email. Paypal have advised on the support chat a zero balance which leads me to believe it is fake

I received the same letter, for £815.70. I called up Paypal and they were absolutely useless sending me from pillar to post, but they did say they would investigate it after 40 minutes. A random email account  made an account under my name/address and has somehow used $1000 dollars, to which I have received the bill for from Wescot to my home address of £815.70.My account is also on £0 balance and I have never opened up any form of Credit with Paypal.  I called up Wescot and told them that Paypal are now investigating. I will find out more as soon I find out - I am also planning to email someone high up at Paypal because this is clearly a failure of control on their end to allow account creation without any physical proof of address. I am also going to forward to Financial Ombudsman as I believe this needs to be investigated further. Its refreshing to know I'm not the only one, and this type of fraud will more likely be looked into if it is happening to multiple people.

Best wishes,

@Ashr84 I also emailled Wescot - and they have now pulled the debt claim. Make sure you include photos of your Paypal account/and show screenshots of the chat. I am now going to email PayPal regarding the stress this has caused me.
