I opened an email that was a phishing scam posing as PayPal stating that for security reasons I needed to reenter my personal data (SSN and credit card #.

I was using a new device so I thought it was legit. What can I do now? The email has disappeared.

I'm sorry to hear about the phishing email you received. I know how scary this situation can be. First, I recommend calling your financial institution and having the card canceled. This will prevent it from being used anywhere. After you receive your new card, you can add it to your PayPal account. Your financial institution may also offer identity theft protection monitoring. I would inquire with them upon the same call. Identity theft protection monitoring can help if your social is used by someone else. After you have canceled the card, please reset your password and security questions on your PayPal account. I also recommend setting up 2-Step Verification for an extra layer of security. If you can locate the email you had received, please forward it to phishing@paypal.com.
