Deferred payment

A couple of times recently, after instructing a Paypal payment for an Ebay purchase, I have had a message back saying that I have opted to pay after deliver and that payment will be made in 14 days time.  I don't think I've done anything differently from normal and obviously this can be annoying to the seller.  Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong (I want to make the payment immediately) and what I can do to correct it please?  Thanks.

The seller won't be annoyed as they still get credited in advance by paypal as they do normally when you pay.

When you pay a seller it is never instant, paypal credit the seller and then start to upload funds from your funding source.

But what happens with pay after delivery is that paypal don't take the funds to reimburse themselves until 14 days later.

They sneakily tucked it in for you to agree to during one of the payment processses and that encouraged you to use PAD rather than a c.c. etc.

If you want to turn it off do this >>>> (I did).

To change the default way you pay for purchases:
1.Log into your PayPal account at www.paypal.co.uk
2.Click 'Profile' near the top of the page
3.Click ‘My money’.
4.Click ‘Update’ beside ‘bank accounts.’
5.Under 'Paying after delivery is my preferred way to pay', click 'Turn this option off'.

Otherwise, you can decide not to use PAD during the checkout flow. Click 'Change' on the Review Your Information page during checkout and select a different payment method.

Hi

I too made several purchases unbeknown to myself and didn’t find out until I got a bank statement informing me I was overdrawn so I incurred bank charges of 30 pounds.

I rang PayPal and found out about deferred payments and was told it was my fault for turning it on and nothing to do with them.

I have used PayPal for over 10 years and never even knew this option existed till they sent me overdrawn.

I spoke to security department who had no idea about when this feature was announced or implemented all they could tell me was it was activated on the 18th March.

This is scandalous that they have activated a feature of delayed payments without specifically telling you in BOLD print and they should hold their hands up to the fact , I do not see why I should have to pay my bank charges that I incurred through PayPal’s obvious incompetence.

Regards

Charles

Hi Charly_brown,

Welcome to our community.

I understand this situation can be frustrating. PayPal cannot be held responsible for the fees you have incurred as you requested that PayPal make a payment on your behalf with the understanding that we would later request the funds from the bank account you registered with us.

I am really sorry. I can’t reimburse any charges placed by your financial institution as it the individuals responsibility to ensure that there is sufficient funds available and ensure their bank do not allow their account to become overdrawn.

I hope this info helps.

I understand you have to say that.

Still, you completely ignored the man's issue, namely that you did not ANNOUNCE this new deferred payment option, and it was simply sprung on him. That is actually the complete opposite of "you requested that PayPal make a payment on your behalf with the understanding that we would later request the funds from the bank account."

Like I said, I understand PayPal want to cover their behind, legally. I expect little else. But at least, if for nothing else than the internal way you handle things, next time you introduce such a new feature, please do announce it, in BOLD, like the OP indicated.
