fine print at paying options

Hi, I recently tried to order with paypal at wayfair.ca.... In the fine print when we arrived at paying options paying through paypal, I noted that I HAVE TO AGREE to let wayfair control my credit card if I went through for the next time and NOT paypal... I do NOT understand this! Isn't this the whole purpose of paypal? that it is the "middle man" so nobody else can/will have the control of MY credit card on internet? Basically I have to agree that wayfair.ca is allowed to keep my credit card credentials by accepting paying through paypal! Is that even legal?

Hi @aljay-hogwarts,

Thank you for your post and welcome to the Community.

I'm sorry that there was any text that alarmed you during checkout. Can you furnish a screenshot or a paste of the text that you're referring to so we can get some clarity about what has been said? I believe that it may be a matter of confusion with interpretation that can be cleared up, but it's best to be sure that we're looking at the same verbiage.

Thank you!

Olivia

For some reason Wayfair.ca doesn't let me log in no more for 3 days already. As much as I want to copy the text. I can't reach it ...

Hi @aljay-hogwarts,

I'm sorry to hear that! The main reason I ask is because I believe what the text says is something to the effect that the agreement allows future purchases made through the billing agreement to be charged using the same payment method. Not that the merchant would have access to the payment method information, but that they would be approved to charge the same billing agreement and that PayPal would use the same payment method to do so. This is typically required when paying a large merchant, so that future transactions do not require all the same information to be entered repeatedly.

I obviously would prefer to review the verbiage you're seeing to confirm that what I believe to be true is what you're being shown, but that's my guess. Does that sound like it is what might have been there?

Hi Olivia,

Yes, what you bring up is very much alike I saw. However, I would appreciate more if I Just have no info from me linger somewhere with company's like wayfair. They are too well-known to abuse credentials that are stored.  I tried to change (which was an option) but the next menu wasn't there.

I just don't trust internet and will go pretty far to keep it that way. If I have no fait in it, I prefer other way's or not at all. It's not my loss that I won't buy it at those possibilities.

Hi @aljay-hogwarts,

Wayfair or any other merchant does not have your financial information or anything else that is not absolutely necessary to the completion of the order and the tracking of the transaction in their history. They never see your credit card number, or even that you've paid with a card. That information is only saved to the agreement on the PayPal side of things, so PayPal knows how to conduct the next transaction. The merchant will know your address for shipping, and they know your name, and they know that you've paid and agree to pay for any future purchases for as long as the billing agreement exists.

There isn't a way to opt out of the establishment of a billing agreement in situations where one is required in checkout to complete the payment. In order to make the payment, the billing agreement is a part of the transaction.

However, you can disconnect the billing agreement afterward if you would like to. If this is the choice you make, the merchant will still have your name and address. There is no information that the billing agreement affords the merchant that is not already found in the transaction details themselves. The same information would be available with or without a billing agreement with any merchant or seller, the only difference is that you would need to sign in and reinitiate the agreement to make future purchases with that merchant.

I hope this helps set your mind at ease!

Olivia

Which  I will use a next time.
