PayPal subscriptions / seller protection

Hello.

I run an assistive technology software / hardware website. This is one of our many product pages:

https://limetech.uk/product/amy-adult-female-ivona-british-english-sapi-5-text-to-speech-voice/

GoCardless convinced me that their Direct Debit system offers seller protection (saying that PayPal subscriptions do not). Now, after a lot of work, GoCardless have said that there offer no protection to sellers, and advised me to have a contract written.

  • Reason for wanting subscriptions / split payments: Software created solely for the dyslexia / physical disability market is more extensive due to higher development costs for a relatively small market segment
  • Income: Some disabled people are not in paid employment, so are not able to pay (for example) GBP 1505 upfront for a five year Alinea Suite license plus a lifetime text-to-speech voice license, but could pay GBP 5.78 per week for 5 years
  • Problem: There is no way to force acceptance of a contract before a product is purchased using a GoCardless split payment.

Obviously, only a few weekly payments being made by the customer before payment cancellation would be disastrous for us, and any small, growing business.

If anybody could tell me what protections PayPal does / does not offer to sellers, I would be very grateful 😊

Many thanks

Sarah

Many thanks KernowLass

We too are in Kernow.

I followed your advice, and read:

"...You must accept a single payment from one PayPal account for the purchase (partial payment and/or payment in instalments are excluded)."

The above is quite worrying. If PayPal offer sellers the opportunity to sell using "subscriptions", surely they should give equal protection to those sellers?

Arrrgh.
