Paypal Autopay Overiding Payment of Choice for Individual Transaction

Hi all, after talking to 4 people at Paypal's customer service and being denied to file a case, I'm looking here for answers before filing a complaint with the FTC:
I have PayPal set up for autopay with Homedepot. Our dryer broke, and when I ordered a new one online, I paid with PayPal but changed the payment method to my husband's debit card to be charged in four installments. That transaction was complete, and it shows as a pending transaction on my PayPal account, along with a pending charge on his personal bank account.
However, the default payment through Autopay was charged instead! The entire payment came out of my personal bank account and now I have a negative balance. Every PayPal employee I talked to said I agreed to the terms of payment with Autopay (maybe I did, but it shows my default card as my CC, not even my debit account) and wouldn't change the payment method because it's a completed transaction.
How is this legal? At no point in processing my order did anything appear saying this form of payment would be used and would override my pay in four installments with my husband's card. OF COURSE, I wouldn't have completed the purchase if I knew this to be the case!
