Preferred credit card

I selected a new credit card as preferred, but PayPal keeps charging the previous card.

I understand your concern about the preferred payment method. Please note that you need to add a payment method that is card to your PayPal account before you can select it as a preferred way to pay. Changing your preferred payment method won’t affect automatic payments. You can update your payment preference directly on the automatic payment. if you are referring to subscriptions or automatic payment it is possible that the card is not updated to that particular subscription. Please check this Help Center Article to manage your automatic payments. If you've 2 different card on your PayPal account in which one is set as preferred method and payment is going through on different card, it is possible that this might be due to risk.  To provide a safer online payment network, every action through PayPal is reviewed before it's approved. Occasionally, an action won't go through due to the various precautions we take to improve the transaction safety. If the system deems a payment to be a potentially high risk, the system may limit the payment options or block the payment from going through all together.
 

Here’s how to set a card as a preferred payment method:

  1. Go to your Wallet.
  2. Click the card you'd like to use as your preferred payment method.
  3. Click Set as preferred.

I already had my preferred payment selected that was in my list  and it still used another payment method I did not choose !

Me too!

Why doesn't paypal at least give a warning before switching from preferred to other payments methods?

Furthermore, why does paypal not notify and confirm the other payment method/source it choses prior to

transaction completion?

I completely understand your concern about your payments not getting debited from your preferred payment method. Every time you make a payment from your PayPal account it goes through a series of filters to determine how much potential risk may be involved. Occasionally, the system must change a payment method if it noticed a pattern associated with risk. Apologies for the inconvenience again!
