Refund from Ebay to PayPal & back on Credit Card?

I used Paypal to purchase an item on ebay.  The item showed up on the credit card I use with PayPal shortly thereafter.  The ebay seller never shipped item so ebay refunded the money back to my Paypal account.  I spoke with a PayPal representative and they said they had already sent the refunded money back to my credit card.  But when I called the credit card company they had not received those funds and said it could take up to 15 days to process a PayPal refund.  Does anyone have any idea or experience with how long it usually takes from the time Paypal sends the money to when the credit card company shows it as received?  Hopefully that limbo time in not 15 days!

Here is the CORRECT answer to my question for MY case in this situation.  It took 48 hours for my credit from ebay to transistion through PayPal and  my Credit Card company.  Not any longer than that!  It was just a simple credit of the money back on my card. So not 7, 15 or even 30 days as I was told  it might take from others on this community board.  I was very lucky!  I understand a lot of the ebay/PayPal transactions are way more complicated than mine and know other refunds can and might take a lot longer as some have suggested.  That is why I gave the details of what happened in my own case. There was no dispute with ebay for the refund of the item. The seller never made any contact or shipped the item with 2 different people for their purchases on the same day on ebay.  Therefore a refund to my PayPal account was given without hassle.  PayPal shows the refund going in and out of my account on the same exact day as that.....May 8th.  And they had a transaction number for the transfer of funds to my credit card company.  The credit card comapny shows the refund as May 8th....the same day as the ebay and PayPal transactions.  Yet they wait 48 hrs to show it in your balance information.  Today, May 10th, it has been processed, no longer in my balance information and I am good to go.  Just letting others know there is hope for faster action on things than just what is stated in the PayPal HELP information and from people on this community site.  You just have to be informed and stay on top of it.  Thanks for the help from others though.  I appreciated it! I know there are a lot of people who have way more complicated dealings than mine and needed those suggestions. I just had to ignore the bad advise and continue on.  And I DID have to make a lot of phone calls, but it was worth it.  I guess I can keep my day job and still figure things out on my own.

15 days is very good.  In general it could be up to 30 days.

As long as the refund shows in your PayPal transactions all is fine.

REALLY??? It would take 15 days for my money to leave my Paypal account electronically and be sent straight to the credit card company the same way? Where is it for that 15 days? It only takes minutes to show up on your account when you purchase something. 15 days is NOT a good amount of time for this to take to occur, especially when the payment is now due on the credit card.  It is funny that you said as long as the refund shows in your PayPal transactions all is fine.  I doubt the credit card company who demands their payment when due will agree with that either.

"That's the way it works."  After reading a lot of posts people make on here I am thinking WORKS is not the right word to use.  But I am truly interested as to where all that money is for those 15 days?  The credit card company says any & all refund credits made to them are posted immediately, when received. They stated that PayPal is considered a THIRD PARTY transaction. So what does Paypal have to do that takes 15 days to electronically transfer the funds from my PayPal account to my credit card company?  It's a good thing I have never had to do a refund before.  Bummed that this experience was so negative.  But happy that all my other PayPal experiences were positive.  I feel bad for so many people on here who are so unhappy. It is eye opening!

Thats the way a credit entry works ,usually 7 days but could be up to 30 days,it is credit card industry practice.

It takes more work than a debit entry to your credit card account,it has t o find the original debit entry first

like if everyone gives me $20 ,and you want your $20 back,first I must look up the $20 you give me,then I give you back your $20.

If you want to know where the money is during the refunding period, then ask the accounts at your bank, from your c redit card, or even from PayPal accountants.  Perhaps get an accountant job at a payment processor to learn the details of how the system works.

I understand that you are a volunteer on this site. But as an advisor, you never answered my question regarding my refunded money.  You Just told me that is how it works. And that is that!  You now sound mean spirited and inappropriate as a PayPal advisor.  Because I truly DO want to know where my money is right now and why it takes so long for an electronic transfer of funds to be made. Ebay pushed the refund button and it showed up within 5 minutes as a refund on my PayPal statement. The Paypal representative I DID speak with today at 4:13 PM was named Shin. She told me the money was already sent to my credit card. As a matter of fact she said an ebay refund was automatically refunded to the credit card used for that ebay purchase.  When I called my credit card company to hear my balance, it had not yet been paid.  So I spoke with one of their credit card representatives, Mary, and she said if it HAD, indeed, been sent by Paypal it would have shown up immediatley on my balance when they received it.  They do not hold it or even wait until midnight to post credit/refund transactions.  So if ebay did their part and Discover has not received it, I was wondering what happened with Paypal.  It was just a simple question, seeking an informed answer. If the Paypal rep had not told me it was already sent to my credit card today I would not have been so concerned right now.  Therefore I was using this forum to try to get an answer to that. Just to see if any other PayPal customers had experience with this and knew how long the process took.  Not exactly sure why you are continuing on in such a mean spirited manner though.  Saying things like...Perhaps get an accountant job at a payment processor to learn the details of how the system works is not appropriate for a PayPal volunteer advisor to say to another PayPal customer concerned about their money.  As you can see I HAD contacted ALL the people you suggested already and had not found the the answer yet.  I assume the money is in limbo with either Paypal or the credit card company. That is the real question.  So I wouldn't need to get a job as an accountant processor to answer that.  All I wanted was for a true PayPal/Credit Card representative or informed customer to say this is probably the reason why it takes so long.  I would like to/and did give Kudos to sumiko (Contributor) who has responded to my past questions in an polite and informative manner.  And I gave Kudos to sharpiemarker (Volunteer Advisor) who just said to try googling or Wikipedia-ing it.  I will do that.  And thanks for being nice!  I am hopeful I will find out in a couple of days where my money is and that the transactions are taking place that are needed to get that monbey back on my credit card.  It sounds as though it may just take a little more time than I anticipated.  I told the credit card company I would call back in 48 hrs because they are already checking into the situation for me.  I am just trying to stay positive and not have to make a credit card payment for a product I never received and have already gotten a refund for.  The payment is due in just a few days.  I think the credit card company is going to work with me on that.   BUT, If I want or need to keep asking questions, I will feel free to do so. I believe that is what this forum is for. So if you are upset about that, DPCreations, just ignore me and continue to help out with others.  I would appreciate that.  Thanks to all for your replies!

Forum members cannot know the internal workings or the accounting reasons.  In reality the reasons aren't relevant as knowing the internal workings isn't going to change the outcome.

No forum members have access to your account detials nor to your transcation details so no one here can give details about your transactions; the best anyone can do is general information which you have rejected every time.

For the real details you get what you can from PayPal customer support.
