Will pending payments expire?

I recently placed an order with Argos, and paid with Paypal, but now they are saying the yhave not received my order or payment. I told them I had paid with Paypal and they told me to ring up Paypal about it instead to cancel it. Well it turns out that it was still pending and Paypal were unable to do anything to cancel it, so I was told to ring Argos again.
They have been completely unhelpful and unwilling to look up the transaction to try and cancel it. They said that if left for a while it will just cancel itself.
Is this true? If it's left pending for long enough will my money be returned to me?
It's giving me such a headache trying to get it back, and it seems like no one can help me. 😞

Hey guys,
When an order is initiated through the PayPal website, it won't be accepted until the merchant accepts it. If your merchant advises you that they can't see the order on their PayPal account, it will be cancelled automatically after 29 days and the money will be released back to your PayPal account.
I realise that this may be very frustrating for you both but if orders are initiated through the PayPal website, they aren't cancelled automatically until a period of 29 days passes from when the orders were initiated.
Please let me know if you need any further assistance.
David.

Hi there jkmrs,
Go to the transaction and click on 'details' next to the payment, if this is an Authorisation the chances are no funds were held unless you had funds in your PayPal balance at the time of making this payment.
Let us know how you get on.

Hi Siobhan,
The exact same thing has happened to me and I hope you can help.
I paid for an Argos item with Paypal - the process returned a message stating the confirmation order could not be sent. Since then the payment was in a status of 'PENDING'.
Lat week it went to 'EXPIRED' but I cannot see an option to return my payment.
The payment was taken from my paypal account as I had sufficient funds in there.
When will it be returned to my Paypal account so I can re-order this item?? Surely keeping hold of my money and not returning it is tantamount to thievery.
Thanks,
Scott

Hi I bought something online from Argos and paid with paypal which is linked to my debit card. I kept a printed copy of the receipt which says "this amount has been paid using paypal". The payment was still pending after over a week so I transferred the amount into my paypal account so I wouldn't accidentally spend it on something else. Now the payment is expired but I have received the goods, I phoned paypal to ask why they didn't give Argos the money and they said Argos had 21 days to claim the payment before it expired but they didn't claim it. Is there a legal time limit for Argos to contact me regarding payment? I know it's very wrong but I don't want to contact them to point out their mistake, is it stealing if u try to pay someone but they don't take your money but they give you the goods anyway? Thanks.

I have just ordered from Argos too and got pending on my paypal account even though it said on Argos website sorry we have not been able to process your paypal order. Please select an alternative method of payment. Luckily I seen this post here, because otherwise I was going to pay via a different method. Now I am hoping I will find in next 48 hours of hopefully finding my order has gone through, and not in a mess as reading it here. I feel in limbo now with what I have read here.

I actually made a purchase on August 30, but the payment was pending for only a few days, and it expired on the 4th? Last time I checked, the 30th to the 4th is NOT 29 days. According to my calculations, that's only a 5 day period. o3O
I tried again on the 4th moments after noticing it was expired, but it still leaves me baffled and confused as to why it expired so quickly.
This payment is also still pending, and I'm not expecting it to be resolved in a day, but if THIS one expires, too, *hopefully not in a 5 day period like the last*, should I wait a few days before trying again? Or should I put my money onto a different card to see faster results?
