Paypal says my Bank refuses to accept Direct Debit Instruction for purchases

I have bought and sold on eBay using Paypal since 2003 without any problems but for the past couple of months when I have bought an item on eBay I get messages from Paypal saying my bank refuses to accept the DDI (Direct Debit Instruction) and that the money has been taken using my Direct Debit card. This is really p.....g me off because when I checked with my bank they denied this completely. Has anyone else suffered from this? I would stop using Paypal but so many sellers on eBay say purchasers must use Paypal

Hi Jockelder2003,

If a payment fails from a bank account it is due to your bank denying the transfer or cancelling the direct debit mandate. As PayPal pay these funds instantly it is not in our interest for you payments to fail. I would suggest that you contact your bank and request that they review your direct debit  mandate for PayPal as it may have been cancelled.

I hope this helps

Hi,

I have also had the same problem. I have made payments from my Paypal account for years without problem and all of a sudden the bank has declined the request for transfer. When I contacted my bank they have said that Paypal is requesting an unauthorised direct debit. They said if I agree to the the direct debit, Paypal will take money from my account each month...is this correct or will Paypal only take the money each time it is requested?

The other option they suggested was to remove my bank account with Paypal and set up debit card or credit card for transfers, avoiding the direct debit issues...is this correct?

Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom_R,

If your bank is stating that the funds are being requested via an unauthorised direct debit mandate It is generally because the mandate was cancelled. If you wish you can remove your bank account and re-add it to your account to provide you with your option to complete the direct debit mandate again. When you bank account is re-add you will see a link stating "set up bank funding". You will need to complete this section and request that two small deposits are sent to your bank account to confirm.

You can however add your debit card to your account and use your as a funding source instead of your bank account. To add your card please click on the Profile tab on your account overview screen.

I hope this helps

Hi Paula,

Thanks for the advice. I have to say i am finding Paypal extremely frustrating to use and not at all helpful with my problem at the moment.

My balance is currently in negative credit due to when i tried to buy something from a online vendor. This sale went through ok from their side and money was credited to their account, they sent the goods but then my bank declined the direct debit and the money was then taken back by the bank, much to the alarm of the person selling me the goods. As my bank is refusing the transfers now from Paypal i can not add funds and get back into credit nor remove the bank account until i am back in credit. I can not add funds via any of the other cards i have listed either as when i click to add funds the only option available is via my bank account..of which my bank declines. I seem to be stuck. In the meantime i have paid the vendor through my brothers Paypal account but there is still and open case with Paypal and the vendor.

What to do?

Thanks

Tom

Well if you've already paid them a second time then maybe the best thing to do would be to ask them to refund the initial payment to you. That way your balance will zero off as the money they were pre-paid with will be sent back to you.

You might want to look into what happened with the Direct Debit mandate in the first place as well.
