Pay in 3 refund less

I just received a refund on the first of three payments of a Pay in 3 transaction, but it was almost a third less than what I paid. The seller, Sainsbury's took £3.50 postage off the balance on return which the post office said I did not have to pay as their label was paid, but even at that, it looks like this £3.50 was removed from my refund. So, an item which cost £40 which I paid a third of has been refunded at only £9 something. I have not been refunded what I paid at the outset.
