Examples of Suspected Fraud/Fake Emails

Hello everyone!

One of the greatest strengths consumers possess against fraud and phishing is education and collaboration.  To help support your safety online, I'm going to open this special thread up for you.  Here, you can post examples of what you believe to be attempts by individuals to defraud you or others of their hard earned valuables and money.

Before we begin, a few housekeeping points:

  • We will be using this as a "master thread," so if we find an example in other areas of the boards, we may merge the post into this one.

  • For everyone's safety, please remove any last names or contact information (including email addresses) from your examples.  In many instances, the names provided by fraudsters are fake or may actually be the name of someone they already defrauded.

  • On that same note, please don't ever attempt to confront a fraudster or attempt to track them down.  Instead, turn the information you do have over to your local authorities.

  • Please also remove any links from your posts, as these could potentially go to spoofed or phishing websites.

Other than that, we only ask that you keep it productive and stay within the Forum Decorum and posting guidelines.  I'll be stopping in on a regular basis to clean house and comment on posts, so don't be surprised if you see my mug - or another moderator - stopping in to say hello!

With that said, I'm going to start moving posts in, so you might see some older examples mixed in with the new posts.  I hope this thread becomes a great resource for everyone!

Stay safe,

Adrian

Just happen to me.

He use the gmail adress:

<removed>

the cell number

<removed>

to shipping adress:

Name:   John <removed>
Address: <removed>
City:   Surulere,
State:  Lagos
Country:  Nigeria
Zip code:  23401

I text my transaction. He said he was a military officier living in USA. He offers 50$ more for my item and ask me to send it to his GF in Nigeria in a birthday wrapping.

I receive a confirmation email ''from'' Services Paypal. Like you can see in my screenshot(<removed>). He used a similar paypal adresse: <removed>.

I googled the adress and search for shipping price then I found all the post about fraud.

Then my husband starts to ask pointy questions about his military base and we confirm his story don't make any sense.

I gave him a fake tracking number .

Lets see what happen.

I just got a generous offer from Nigeria. Instead of buying via eBay, he asked me paypal invoice. Here is copy and paste:

"here is the address of were the item will be posted to is below:

Jimi <removed>
<removed>
Surulere,
Lagos
23401
Nigeria.

also send me a paypal invoice money request so that i can make the payment and you can post out the item.

Same, got some guy trying to scam me for $2k. His adopted son who's stationed in a missionary college would obviously appreciate such an exposure gift... Very obvious but playing along and informed PayPal. Will wait til he actually deposits the money and send a package (with a second place Scam Award!) so he at least has a tracking number. Received email "from" eBay saying to take the item down as it has been paid for. Email looks legit as it's <removed> even when you click on it but in the 'other' section there's <removed>. Not sure how hey did that. Scam buyer uses email <removed> and username on eBay is charlecharlto0. Postal address is Jimi <removed> <removed> off Lawanson Surulere, Lagos 23401 Nigeria. Ah eBay, why can't we post emails?!! It's the first thing I google when a buyer emails me!

Yep, same guy tried us too.

Same name, same address.. wanted us to post to his step-son, who's a misionary in Nigeria.

He even sent us a fake Paypal email, followed by a fake eBay email, both stating that he had payed the funds and we should immediately remove the item from eBay and post it.

but.. I guess there are people out there who'd fall prey to them.

Makes running a legit business difficult.scam.jpg
