Hello everyone!
One of the greatest strengths consumers possess against fraud and phishing is education and collaboration. To help support your safety online, I'm going to open this special thread up for you. Here, you can post examples of what you believe to be attempts by individuals to defraud you or others of their hard earned valuables and money.
Before we begin, a few housekeeping points:
- We will be using this as a "master thread," so if we find an example in other areas of the boards, we may merge the post into this one.
- For everyone's safety, please remove any last names or contact information (including email addresses) from your examples. In many instances, the names provided by fraudsters are fake or may actually be the name of someone they already defrauded.
- On that same note, please don't ever attempt to confront a fraudster or attempt to track them down. Instead, turn the information you do have over to your local authorities.
- Please also remove any links from your posts, as these could potentially go to spoofed or phishing websites.
Other than that, we only ask that you keep it productive and stay within the Forum Decorum and posting guidelines. I'll be stopping in on a regular basis to clean house and comment on posts, so don't be surprised if you see my mug - or another moderator - stopping in to say hello!
With that said, I'm going to start moving posts in, so you might see some older examples mixed in with the new posts. I hope this thread becomes a great resource for everyone!
Stay safe,
Adrian

I posted an add in Kijiji. Someone claiming to be on vacation in CA asked to buy the item I had posted. They would pay me $50 more than I asked plus $150 to ship the item. He told me he wanted the item for his son Ben. I am selling a girlie grad dress. My first clue that this was a fraud.
He asked to pay via PayPal. I would not agreed to anything until he gave contact info. The ship to address is:
John <removed>
Nigeria
23401
This person sent me a message on my cell phone using <removed>. I looked the number up on 411.com and the IP address in a New York VOIP address.

This helped me so much, i was about to believe in a guy that was going to "Purchase" my PS4, similar story, "Hi im a dad and buying this for my daughter", so i tell him ok ill send it to you and i supposedly got an email from paypal with the amount of the money he would pay me, and the address i received to send it was in Nigeria and i googled the address and some links about scams showed up and i started thinking this would be one, so i checked the FAKE paypal email comfirmation and its different from the real one since i recently changed my password:
FAKE PAYPAL EMAIL
(* = @ / = . )
Service*Paypal/com <<removed>>
as you see the fake one has caps and whats with the agent email? So its FAKE.
The real Paypal email as no caps and is used as name and email when you get emails from them unlike that Fake.
Also i never got money received pending on the Paypal website so it also made me think, but of course theres none since its FAKE.
Here i leave you the info of this scumbag of person.
Fake name: Scott <removed>
Email: <removed>
Story: I would buy this for my daughter. Send it ONLY threw USPS Express Mail Service.
Address:
Name: Tessy <removed>
Country: Nigeria

Hi guys! Here are a few tips on not getting scammed (although from reading some of the posts, think some of you really deserved it!)
1. SCAMMING IS ALL ABOUT GREED! Scammers, of any descent or origin play on peoples greed. You are not as smart or lucky as you think. Why would anybody in their right mind pay 3-4times the price of an item?? Does it grant 3 wishes? No. That must mean that you think he doesnt know the value of that item. Why didn't say 'Mister i really cant take $300 for this. It's only $50! Be honest. Deep down you thought 'wow what a clueless sop'
2. Which brings me to the next point. Africa is not as 'uncivilized' as many of you think. They're pretty clued in actually. So next time somebody wants to pay 'extra' for an item, ask yourself, 'why doesn't he just get it from a shop? We all come to ebay to get either, 'rare items, or cheap items. If what you're selling is not rare, and the price he's offering to pay is not cheap...then...ask yourself. Almost every international brand has a store in Nigeria, if they want a 'brand new phone' or whatever, trust me, they can buy it straight from the store FOR LESS!
3. THANKING THE LORD for google maps? It works well in Nigeria...ish, but that doesnt mean a thing. Those addresses are 'valid locations', so yeah it may likely show up as SOMEWHERE on your map. So yeah i wouldn't trust mapping as a tool.
4. However, research is your friend. I know its difficult for 1st time buyers and sellers on ebay, but the cookie crumbles that way for a reason. most scammers dont have feedback...for obvious reasons lol. They have fresh accounts, probably even opened that month/week. But if they do have feedback, track down its source. Send an email to the seller, send an email to somebody else even THAT seller sold to also.
